Students learn how to optimize administrative functions within organizations such as clinics, hospitals, and doctors’ offices. They acquire knowledge about federal and state regulations that inform the effective running of healthcare facilities. Those pursuing managerial positions require at least a bachelor’s degree, acquiring leadership, problem-solving, and technical skills employers need. The job outlook for medical and health services managers remains way above average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Individuals pursuing these careers can expect a job growth of 20% between 2016 and 2026, BLS notes, earning a median pay of $98,350 per year. The following lists 25 schools offering best value health services administration online degrees from accredited programs. They offer a rigorous curriculum, flexibility, and affordability.
The 20 Best Online Health Administration Programs Ranking Methodology
For this ranking, we focused on public and private (non-profit) colleges and universities that offer undergraduate (bachelor’s) health administration degrees online. Because the focus of this list is on affordability, we only considered programs with average* tuition rates of $25,000/year or less.
*For public schools, we calculated the average value of their in-state and out-of-state rates.
After compiling a list of all the colleges that offer healthcare administration programs online and meet the above criteria, we then collected data in four categories:
- Program Popularity: Out of all the students enrolled in health programs, how many are majoring specifically in healthcare administration? In other words, how successful is the health admin program at attracting students to their degree over other health-focused options? To find out, we calculated both the number of students who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration in the 2015-16 school year as well as the percentage of all health program graduates (undergrad) that that number represents.
- Curricular Focus: How many and what percentage of the program’s required classes focus specifically on healthcare administration topics (as opposed to less-relevant content – for example, general business or finance)?
- Overall Strength in Healthcare: How many different health-related bachelor’s degrees does the school offer? In general, more programs = more time, resources, and faculty expertise that the school is willing to devote to healthcare education as a whole.
- Affordability: What is the average annual cost of attendance?
After collecting and sorting all the information, we ranked the candidates according to their performance in each area. Finally, we summed up the results and gave each school a final score using a curve so that the top-scoring program earned an even 100 points.
