About Columbia College

Located in Missouri, Columbia College is a private, non-profit institution that was founded in 1851. Although the college operates as a nonsectarian school, it remains historically connected to the Disciples of Christ sect of Christianity. Once named Christian Female College, the school bears the distinction as the first college for women operating west of the Mississippi River. At the time of its inception, the University of Missouri did not admit women, so the school was created by advocates for female education. Today, the school has around 2,100 undergraduate students attending classes at its Columbia location, as well as through its online degree program. The official colors of the school are navy blue and silver, and the school's sports teams are known as the Cougars.

Columbia College Accreditation Details

Columbia College has retained regional accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission since 1918. The last time the school underwent reaccreditation was in 2012 when a peer review team examined the college's petition for reaffirmation of accreditation. The college will seek reaffirmation in 2022. Some programs at the college also have programmatic accreditation like the Associate in Science in Nursing, which is approved by the state's nursing board, and the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), which is provisionally approved by the Missouri State Board of Nursing. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN to BSN) program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The college's programs in education are approved by the Missouri State Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
