1. What Are the Daily Responsibilities of an Aerospace Engineer?
The daily responsibilities of an aerospace engineer can vary from one industry to another. For the most part, aerospace engineers oversee the design and manufacture of aerospace products; evaluate designs, inspect damaged or malfunctioning parts, and analyze proposals to ensure they’re financially and technically feasible. It’s important that applicants understand and acknowledge that there are actually two branches in this field. One is astronautical engineering, and the other is aeronautical engineering. The applicant should also be aware of what the daily responsibilities might be for the specific job for which he or she is applying.
2. Why do You Want to Work for Us?
This is probably one of the most common interview questions, but it’s often used because this particular field of engineering is such a complex field. The employer wants to know that the applicant is interested not just in an aerospace engineer career but a career working for their company. They’ll want to know what made the applicant choose their company over all the other possible companies. It’ important that the applicant assures the employer that he or she wants a career with that company and assure them that he or she is looking for a long-term job.
3. What Do You Know About Our Company?
This is also a very common question, and the applicant should be prepared to answer it in great detail. Although having the aerospace engineering degree is important to the company, they also want to know that the applicant is not just applying to have a job but is aware of what type of company they’ll be working with. It’s important that an applicant researches the company and be familiar with what the company does, what they produce and any expectations they may have of their engineers.
4. What Made You Choose Aerospace Engineering?
Let’s face it, aerospace is not the most common career an individual could choose. It’s not every day you see aerospace engineers, so the employer is going to want to know why this person chose to work as an aerospace engineer. This career requires at least a bachelor’s degree, which includes at least four years of study. Depending on the job, the candidate may also be required to obtain a security clearance, so the applicant should be committed to this field and should be able to portray this to the potential employer.
5. How Important are Aerospace Engineers to Our Society?
A potential employer does not want an applicant trying to become an aerospace or aeronautical engineer because the pay is good. They want an individual who is familiar with the job and is committed to it. As long as we continue to have airports, airplanes and military aircraft, we will have the need for aerospace engineering and the professionals working in the field. They’re also used to create satellites used for weather reports, to send satellites into space, for environmental monitoring and research. A knowledgeable candidate will be able to say that it plays a very important role in society by developing and producing technology that’s used daily.
A 2017 report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicates that aerospace engineers earned an average annual wage of $112,010. That and the fact that about 73,800 new jobs should be created in this field by 2026 makes this a career that’s highly regarded. Having the right answers to common aerospace engineer interview questions is an excellent way for applicants to give themselves an edge over the competition.
