Peterson’s Online Basic Skills Courses offers an Online Academic Skills Course (OASC) and College Skills Training (CPST) for service members, family members, and DoD civilians. The OASC helps build math and verbal skills through interactive lessons, activities, flashcards, quizzes, and practice sets. The course uses a pre-assessment to customize the content to each student. The CPST is designed to develop math, reading, and writing skills to a college level. After a diagnostic assessment, a customized study plan is created to help build college-level skills. Three college-level practice tests are administered to simulate college placement exams. Both courses are self-paced.
Study Guides and Strategies is an academic resource website that was established in 1996 and now has over 10.4 million users who speak over 39 different languages. The website contains strategies on time, stress and project management; problem-solving; studying/learning; thinking/memorizing; test preparation; writing, vocabulary and spelling; research and reading; and math and science. The extensive nature of free resources on the website make this a great online source for veterans transitioning into the academic environment.
Defense Activity of Non-Traditional Support (DANTES) is a support program initiated by Defense Human Resources Activity (DHRA) of the Department of Defense. The website provides information on college preparation, educational funding, earning college credit, the college admissions process, choosing the right school, and tips for successful completion. DANTES also provides videos and reference links specifically designed for service members.
Veteran’s Career Transition Program is sponsored by Syracuse University that provides vocational, entrepreneurial, and career training for service members, veterans, and their families. The Onward to Opportunity partnership with the Veteran’s Career Program (O2O-VCTP) provides certifications and job placement to service members who are transitioning into civilian life. Career paths include information technology positions like entry level IT, information security, cyber security, networking, and programming and development. Business management careers include opportunities like project management and human resources.
National Association of Veterans Upward Bound (NAVUB) supports Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) projects. The projects are dedicated to the development of military veterans. NAVUB works with local, state, regional, and national agencies, organizations, and schools to improve the educational opportunities of veterans. VUB is a Department of Education Trio program designed to provide services for disadvantaged populations. The VUB projects locator will help veterans locate a project director in any state. NAVUB also holds an annual conference and offers scholarships.
Although adjusting to civilian life is often challenging for military veterans, there are many programs that are designed to help. For some, beginning online is an easy first step towards for veterans going back to school.
