West Virginia University Institute of Technology began as the Montgomery Preparatory School in 1895. The school became the West Virginia Trade School in 1917 and reached junior college level in 1931, becoming New River State School. In 1931, the school became New River State College after gaining four-year status and became the West Virginia Institute of Technology in 1941.

In 1996, the school joined West Virginia University, becoming a regional campus, becoming a full division of WVU in 2007.

West Virginia University Institute of Technology is ranked among the top 100 best undergraduate engineering programs in the country according to U.S. News & World Report. West Virginia University Institute of Technology Application Requirements

Freshmen students, those who have not earned college credit after graduating from high school, must forward official high school transcripts as well as official ACT or SAT scores. Students who have earned less than 24 semester hours of college credit after high school must forward an official copy of their high school transcript as well as ACT or SAT scores. All transfer students must submit official copies of transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.

Full-time tuition at the West Virginia University Institute of Technology is $6,960 for residents and $17,544 for non-residents.

Aerospace Engineering

The Aerospace Engineering program is a Bachelor of Science degree program that includes the study of aerospace vehicles, missiles, rockets and spacecraft. Students are provided extensive education in fluid dynamics, solid mechanics and structures. They also receive instruction in stability and control as well as thermal sciences and propulsion. Students ultimately develop the skills and knowledge to create safe, durable aircraft and spacecraft. The program is a 2+2 program with West Virginia University. Students may start as freshmen at WVU Tech in mechanical engineering. Upon completion of the appropriate courses in four semesters and completing them with a GPA of at least 2.0, students can transfer to the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at WVU to complete their Bachelor of Science degree. The program requires 125 semester hours where they learn dynamics, flight vehicle propulsion as well as space flight and systems.

Chemical Engineering

The Chemical Engineering program requires students to complete two-years of classroom study as well as hands-on laboratory experience. Students develop an understanding of engineering and science as well as system design, problem-solving, analysis skills and communications skills. Students develop an understanding of molecular interactions, large-scale chemical processing, chemical engineering thermodynamics and organic chemistry. Students learn in a design laboratory both on their own and with teams to create a comprehensive design project. The design project provides hands-on experience with economic evaluation, project management, flowsheet development, equipment selection, computer-aided design, process operability and control as well as process safety and environmental protection.

Civil Engineering

The Civil Engineering program is offered in small class sizes with a practice-oriented focus. Students work alongside professors one-on-one throughout the program. The program emphasizes preparation for the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE Exam) which is required for registration as a Professional Engineer. Many students in the program participate in the WVU Tech Student Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers, providing students with a valuable network that will last far beyond graduation. Students develop an understanding of surveying, transportation engineering and integrated civil engineering design.

Computer Engineering

The Computer Engineering program at West Virginia University Institute of Technology covers the fundamentals of computer engineering that includes the design of digital systems with modern devices. These may include microprocessors, VLSI circuits and field-programmable gate arrays as well as controls and power systems. Students are exposed to experiential learning opportunities, including co-ops, internships and undergraduate research projects. The program includes in-depth knowledge of mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science and basic engineering. Students study subjects like digital logic design, wireless networking and microprocessor systems.

Electrical Engineering

The Electrical Engineering program at WVU Tech features practice-oriented curriculum in small class sizes. Students develop an understanding of electrical energy and power systems, control systems like robotics and electronics applications as well as communications, electronics, electromagnetic fields such as cell phone technology and microwave systems along with computers. There are many options for experiential learning such as co-ops and internships. Students learn subjects such as electrical power distribution systems, engineering electromagnetics and introduction to robotics. Students may also choose an emphasis on Electrical Energy Systems where all upper-level elections are focused on topics like power systems, renewable and alternative energy generation, power electronics and protective relaying.

Mechanical Engineering

The Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to design and support the production and deployment of systems necessary for modern society. This may include automobiles, aircraft, spacecraft, biomedical devices, chemicals or energy. The program offers a balance of analytical and applied coursework. All labs are equipped with modern test equipment that prepare students for what they will face when they enter the industry. From the creation of a single part to how that part works in a complex machine, mechanical engineering students develop skills necessary to create products and systems that make the modern world run smoothly. Courses required include material science, dynamics of machines and aerodynamics.
