In addition, however, there are fees and housing costs. A double-occupancy dorm room costs $2150 a semester and a private room is $3020. The least expensive meal plan is $1,755. It is expensive to earn a degree. Most students need some type of financial assistance to attend post-secondary school. The first step in getting this help is completing the Free Application for Federal Student Assistance Form. The program uses financial data about the student and his or her family to determine how much they can be expected to contribute to the student’s educational debt. Then the government calculates eligibility for grants, loans, and work-study programs. Many students will qualify for the Pell Grant or the SEOG Grant. Most will be eligible for student loans from the government, either subsidized or unsubsidized.
New Mexico offers several grants to undergraduate students to assist them in getting a higher education. These are based on financial need. One New Mexico grant, The Student Choice, especially targets students who attend either St. John’s College in Santa Fe or The University of the Southwest. The university has some grants available through need as well, but most of the aid that comes through the school is merit-based. Most grants are awarded only to undergraduate students attending face-to-face degree programs who maintain an acceptable GPA. There are scholarships funded by the departments, through the athletic programs, and through activities. Students who maintain a high GPA and who graduate within four years are also eligible for a Debt Buy-Back program. Students who earn a minimum 3.5 GPA are eligible for up to $3,000 and those with a GPA of 3.9 or better can get up to $5,000 of their expenses back. In addition to these programs, private individuals and service organizations, as well as corporate entities, often fund scholarships.
Grants and scholarships do not need to be paid back. Students who do not qualify for enough of this type of “free” money will need to apply for student loans. These are loans that carry lower interest, and that allows students to defer repayment until several months after graduation. Students should note that, although payment of the principle is deferred, the loans accrue interest from the day of inception. If payment on the interest is deferred as well, financial organizations may add additional costs onto the loan. Although higher education is expensive, students who study at the University of the Southwest will find that their ability to earn higher salaries throughout their lifetime will make the investment worthwhile.
