Without a single building to call home, the University of South Alabama opened in 1963. The vision of the new college began in the early 1960s when civic leaders realized that Mobile had outgrown the small downtown extension program. The Alabama Legislature passed a bill creating the new university in 1963 and a new, $1 million building opened in west Mobile in 1964, replacing two extension programs operated by the University of Alabama.

The University of South Alabama, known as "South," is more than 200 miles from other universities in the state, strategically located in the Mobile area. The school sits on 1,200 acres of flower gardens, walking paths and pine trees. There are more than 10 miles of bike trails, swimming pools and a disc golf course.

Today, the University of South Alabama has an enrollment of more than 16,000. The university continues the school's initial vision to foster an environment that blends learning with research so that students are able to become leaders in their fields of study. The University of South Alabama offers a Bachelor of Science degree program in Health Informatics. The program provides students with an understanding of the critical need for computer-based information systems in today's healthcare system. Students learn to develop systems that improve healthcare delivery and outcome. Students develop the skills to analyze information and processes that form the backbone of today's digital world. University of South Alabama Application Requirements

Undergraduates may apply using the online University of South Alabama application or the Common Application. There is an application fee and students must provide official high school transcripts as well as ACT or SAT scores. Students may apply using a paper application, but there is a higher application fee. Transfer students may apply using the online application or a paper application. They must provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.

Students who wish to enroll in graduate programs must apply directly to the program they wish to attend. Each program has different requirements for admission.

Financial aid is available in both need- and merit-based form. Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to qualify. In order to qualify for aid, students must have a high school diploma or GED and be seeking a degree. Students must attend at least half-time I order to remain eligible. Students must be enrolled in a program before completing the FAFSA and have a valid social security number. Male students must also register for the Selective Service and all students must maintain satisfactory academic progress. Both USA and external scholarships are available as well as federal and private grants. Students may also qualify for work-study programs to offset the cost of education. Federal and private student loans, as well as parent PLUS loans, are also available. Students should be aware that, unlike scholarships and grants, loans must be repaid.
