The University of Maine at Machias is a public institution of higher learning located in Machias, Maine. It is among the seven campuses of the University of Maine System. The campus spans over 243 acres in a rural, coastal area of the state on the Machias River. The campus features an array of classrooms, structures, athletic fields, student dormitories, and wilderness walking trails. The university strives to improve the quality of life and economic growth of the Downeast Maine community. The University of Maine Machias offers 12 undergraduate majors, including education, psychology and community studies, business and entrepreneurial studies, biology, English, history, and recreation management. The student to faculty ratio is 14 to one. The average class size is 17 students and the faculty places high emphasis on personalized one-on-one attention. The university was established in 1909 as the Washington State Normal School for providing education to aspiring teachers and other disciplines in education, psychology, recreation, physical sciences, and community studies. The construction of the school was fast and the original brick building is still in use today as Powers Hall. The original name is also present on various other areas of the campus. The Washington State Normal School operated for 42 years and students earned certificates in their disciplines. The school officially became a college in 1952, and it changed its name to Washington State Teachers' College and offered four year degrees. In 1968, the institution became part of the University of Maine System. It officially changed its name to the University of Maine Machias in 1970 and it began a new focus on science and biology. In 1973, a science building was built and in 1983, the gymnasium in Powers Hall was transformed into a Performing Arts Center. In 1999, the Center for Lifelong Learning was built and includes a variety of amenities for students. Today, the UMM is a liberal arts institution that is home to about 1,200 students. The University of Maine at Machias is also home to Sunrise Senior College, which is an institution for individuals over the age of 50. It was established in 2002 and it offers a variety of classes for senior students. The classes are not for credit and they are taught by volunteers with expertise in designated areas.

Online Business and Entrepreneurial Studies Program

The University of Maine at Machias offers a Bachelor of Science in Business and Entrepreneurial Studies. Students will develop the necessary professional abilities needed for success in a highly competitive business world. The online program features a small-college atmosphere with attentive and highly experienced faculty. Courses are offering during all terms to enable students to tailor their program to meet their needs. The program focuses on entrepreneurial talents and features introductory business and marketing classes through capstone courses that highlight the facets of entrepreneurship and real world experiences. Students have the ability to select among six concentrations or design their own. The concentrations include: accounting, marketing, management, business sustainability, and sport and fitness management. All students complete nine foundation courses in business, accounting, marketing, and economics and statistics. The foundation courses total 27 credit hours. Students then select concentration courses totaling 33 credit hours. Students must also complete university core requirements, with a total completion of 120 credit hours required for graduation. Students must maintain a grade point average of at least 2.0. The business core courses include introduction to business and entrepreneurship, marketing and entrepreneurship, financial accounting, managerial accounting, business communications, business law, macroeconomics, microeconomics, and small business management and entrepreneurship. Graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Business and Entrepreneurial Studies at the University of Maine Machias will have the necessary abilities and business know-how to enter the competitive business world as successful entrepreneurs, risk takers, and motivated problem solvers.
