The University of Houston is one of the top public college school systems in Texas. While it operates multiple campuses, one of the largest in that system is the one in Victoria. Now known as the University of Houston – Victoria, it opened in the early 1970s as the University of Houston Victoria Center. Several local groups and prominent organizations petitioned the state to bring a new school to the area that would provide opportunities for students and keep those students from moving out of state or to another city. During the early part of the 1980s, the university adopted its current name and officially became a major university within that school system. In addition to the main campus in Victoria, UHV also has a satellite campus in Cinco Ranch and a second satellite campus in Sugar Land. Those campuses serve as extension schools and offer fewer courses but allow students to transfer back to the main campus.

U.S. News & World Report called UHV a Tier 2 school, which means that while it's not nationally ranked, it is better than some schools in the nation. Many of the programs on its campuses have accreditation from top organizations, and the university has a total enrollment of more than 4,000 students, which includes students enrolled in both bachelor programs and graduate programs.

University of Houston – Victoria Accreditation Details

Prior to applying to the University of Houston – Victoria, you should find out if the university has accreditation and if it has any specialized accreditation for some of the degree programs that it offers. UHV has both types of accreditation. Its general accreditation, which you might hear called regional or institutional accreditation, comes from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Its SACS accreditation is the type required by the government for students who want financial assistance. You can only get government assistance if you enroll in a college that has regional accreditation.

Depending on the program that interests you, you may find that the university has specialized accreditation for that program. The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Accreditation approved the nursing program offered by the university. This applies to the work you do in the classroom and the work you do in the field. The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business accredited its business programs. if you enroll in either the community counseling or school counseling program at UHV, you'll find that it has accreditation from the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs for those degree programs.

University of Houston – Victoria Application Requirements

All incoming freshmen must meet certain requirements before applying to the University of Houston – Victoria. You must be within the top 50% of your class and have a 2.0 grade point average on the standard 4.0 scale. You will also need to score a minimum of 18 on the ACT or 860 on the math and critical reading sections of the SAT. While the university does require that you have a high school diploma before enrolling, you can also provide proof that you successfully completed a home school program or that you have your GED. Home school students must take one of the standardized tests and submit their scores as well. All high school graduates must submit an official transcript from the school they attended.

The only other requirements is the online application. You can create a free account and link your email address to your account. This lets you take your time completing it and gives you the chance to work on it a little at a time instead of finishing it in one sitting. You will need a home address, social security number and phone number. The application asks you about what you want to study, your experiences in high school and your hobbies outside of school.

Tuition and Fees

The fixed tuition plan is a program available through the University of Houston – Victoria that you can enroll in as a freshman. This is an agreement between you and the school that requires you agree to complete your studies there. The university will agree to freeze your tuition at the rate charged when you first started. UHV around $190 per credit hour, which rises to around $265 per credit hour after the university adds all related fees. A full time student who lives in Texas and takes 12 credit hours will pay around $3,000 a semester. Full time students who do not live in Texas pay around $8,100 for the same 12 credit hours.

Financial aid can significantly reduce your costs or cover the total cost of attending college. UHV recommends that you complete the FAFSA and file it several months before you want to enroll. The FAFSA will determine whether you qualify for loans, grants or other programs. Your parents may have the option of getting loans or grants to cover your educational expenses as well. UHF requires that all students interested in scholarships complete a separate scholarship application and submit any necessary forms required by each program. Degree Programs

The University of Houston – Victoria offers fewer degree programs than other schools, but its smaller size offers a number of benefits for its students. When you enroll in the business administration program, you'll get to know your professors on a more personal level, which will help you when it comes to internships and jobs later. The general business program is great for those who want to manage or open a business later because it gives you more familiarity with a wide range of topics. You can also select a concentration in a specific field like health care administration, human resource management, marketing, finance or accounting.

If you dream of one day becoming a writer, the creative writing program may be a better choice for you. This program teaches you about the publishing world and provides you with the skills needed to teach future writers. Though you will earn a general bachelor's degree in humanities, you'll also take a concentration that features six or more creative writing classes. Students take a combination of play writing, screenwriting, poetry writing and nonfiction writing. The University of Houston – Victoria asks all creative writing students to take seminars and write papers to build a strong portfolio of their work.
