Bachelor's of Psychology at the University of Florida

On-campus undergraduate psychology students at the University of Florida earn their Bachelor's of Science degrees by completing 36 major-specific credits along with the necessary university requirements. Students choose one of three tracks which include General Psychology, Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience (BCN), and Behavioral Analysis. The first track provides a broad view of the field with students taking courses from four primary subject areas, Biological Bases, Developmental Changes, Learning and Cognition, and Sociocultural Approaches. The BCN track is more science-oriented requiring extensive mathematics and biology courses in addition to psychology studies. Students who choose the Behavioral Analysis route take more experimental classes, learning to employ theory in practice and test hypotheses about behavior. The department encourages students to volunteer, participate in research, and teach to gain experience in their particular area of interest. The Center for Undergraduate Research hosts a database listing all current studies, and students are encouraged to develop new research proposals as well.

The Bachelor's of Arts in Psychology degree is available to online students which requires 30 hours of major coursework. The course requirements are similar to that of the General Psychology B.S. specialization with less focus on statistics and research. This program can be completed entirely online with faculty support and advising regularly available. Distance students also have opportunities to participate in research programs either via the internet or at one of the related institutions located throughout the country. There is also the option of completing a thesis as part of all psychology undergraduate programs.

About the University of Florida

UF was established in 1853 in Gainesville as one of the many land-grant universities that were built on land given by the federal government with the purpose of creating schools that focused on engineering and agriculture. In time, the university expanded and currently offers degrees in 76 different departments with a focus on research and innovation. With an enrollment of over 50,000 students, the school is one of the top ten largest in the United States. The University of Florida is part of both the sea-grant and space-grant programs which offer funding to help study issues of water conservation, coastal erosion, outer space exploration, and other relevant topics. The Psychology Department is part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences which is the largest college on campus. In 2014, the UF Online platform was first introduced and currently has 18 full undergraduate programs available.

University of Florida Accreditation Details

The process of accreditation is designed to standardize the quality of higher education and to ensure that universities run properly from an administrative standpoint. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) is responsible for the evaluation of post-secondary schools in 11 states in the southeastern region of the United States as well as those in Latin America. Fourteen different aspects of the university are peer-reviewed including financial and physical resources, student achievement, available learning resources, curriculum offerings, faculty, and the governing board. UF last received re-certification in 2014 and is due for its next assessment in 2024. This designation allows students to receive federal financial aid for enrollment.

University of Florida Application Requirements

Admission to the University of Florida is competitive with a 40% acceptance rate and an application deadline of November 1st which is early compared to many other institutions. All potential psychology students need to gain admission to the university by submitting the Coalition Application, complete with $30 application fee and UF Supplement which allows applicants to give a complete picture of themselves through a variety of open-ended questions. A longer essay of at least 2500 characters is also required in response to one of five prompts. Applicants have the option of either submitting ACT or SAT scores with SAT minimum scores of 24 on the Reading and Mathematics sections and 25 on Writing and Language and ACT scores at least 19 on both the Reading and Math portions. In evaluating applications, the admissions board considers both subjective and objective characteristics of each candidate looking for those applicants with high academic potential who are most likely to succeed at the university.

Tuition and Financial Aid

The on-campus tuition rate for undergraduates attending the University of Florida with full-time enrollment is $6380 for Florida residents per year and $28,658 for out-of-state students. Tuition for UF online programs is about half the cost at rates of $3876 and $16,580 for in-state and out-of-state families respectively. All students are encouraged to submit a FAFSA to apply for federal financial aid, and the Office for Student Financial Affairs uses this information to help design aid packages that include grants, scholarships, and loans.

The University of Florida offers several scholarships for students based on a combination of financial need, academic achievement, and social and leadership experiences. For example, the Machen Florida Opportunity Scholarships are provided to students who are the first generation of their family to attend college, and the Benacquisto Scholarships are awarded to students who have achieved academic excellence in high school. The State of Florida also has programs to assist with tuition like the Florida Bright Futures Program which offers several levels of aid based on certain academic qualifications. Other awards are offered to a more specific population like the Minority Teachers Education Scholarship and the Children and Spouses of Deceased or Disabled Veterans program. In addition, the Student Employment Office helps match students with on-campus employment opportunities to help pay for some of their living expenses.
