The University of New Mexico was established in February 1889 under House Bill No. 186 with banker Elias S. Stover as the first president. Surrounding the historic Hodgin Hall, its Pueblo Revival style campus was enlarged dramatically by 300 acres in 1901. Enrollment also jumped at the V-12 Navy College after World War II. With a $393.2 million endowment, UNM stands today as the flagship public, co-educational RU/VH institution. Affiliated with three Nobel laureates, UNM enrolls over 19,880 undergrad and 7,460 post-graduate Lobos. Along with extensions from Gallup to Los Lunas, the University of New Mexico is headquartered on a 600-acre urban campus in Albuquerque with 12 divisions, including the School of Engineering.

According to the U.S. News, UNM is the 176th best national university and 93rd top public college with the country’s 91st best bachelor’s in engineering programs. Forbes ranked New Mexico as the 150th top research university and 109th best public school. Niche applauded UNM as America’s 139th “Best College for Student Athletes” and 195th “Hardest College to Get Into.” Washington Monthly crowned UNM 225th nationally for contribution to the public good. The Princeton Review included the University of New Mexico in the “Best 381 Colleges” but ranked UNM #2 for “Least Accessible Professors.” PayScale recognized UNM for the third best ROI statewide with a median mid-career salary of $78,600.

University of New Mexico Accreditation Details

Continuously since 1922, the University of New Mexico has been institutionally reviewed by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association (HLC-NCA). This regional accreditation ensures UNM’s 65 associate, 97 bachelor’s, 78 master’s, and 47 doctoral programs align with U.S. Department of Education Title IV eligibility criteria. The School of Engineering specifically pursues approval from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). The School’s B.S. Construction Engineering also adheres to the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE).

University of New Mexico Application Requirements

Passing the “selective” admission process for an acceptance letter from the University of New Mexico is tough work. First-year freshmen pursuing their B.S. should have graduated from accredited high schools or taken the GED equivalent for a score above 450. Admission officers look for a college-prep curriculum with four units of English, four units of math, and three units of physical science. On average, admitted Lobos present a secondary GPA of 3.3. The School of Engineering requires pre-majors score at least 19 on the ACT or 990 on the SAT. Preference is given for an ACT math score higher than 25.

Starting the Lobo Trax Audit to matriculate at UNM will require holding 24+ transferrable credits from regionally accredited colleges. Post-secondary coursework attempted must be graded “C” or better with a minimum 2.0 GPA overall. ACT/SAT scores are waived for transfers and freshmen aged 21 or older at any Branch Campus. International students attracted to UNM’s culture must be fluent in English with a minimum paper-based TOEFL score of 500. Graduate admission depends on students holding an accredited bachelor’s with at least 12 upper-division credits in engineering prerequisites. Academic requirements include a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and composite GRE score over 150.

Tuition and Financial Aid

New Mexico residents studying full-time are charged $6,950 for undergrad tuition and fees. Non-resident undergrads will pay considerably more at $21,936 per full-time year. Traditional room and board adds $9,472 annually. UNM suggests budgeting $1,080 for textbooks, $1,818 for transportation, and $2,040 for miscellaneous expenses per year. Total annual cost of attendance is roughly $21,360 (in-state) and $36,346 (out-of-state) for undergrads. Full-time master’s or Ph.D. students from New Mexico pay $7,780 annually. Non-residents earning a graduate degree full-time are billed $22,643 each year. If studying part-time, costs lower to $260 (in-state) and $879 (out-of-state) per credit.

The NCES reports that 96 percent of beginning, full-time Lobos pay less though. The average financial aid package gifts $5,833 per year. Engineering majors should submit the FAFSA to pursue the Federal Pell Grant, FSEOG Grant, or Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant. “Land of Enchantment” residents could obtain the New Mexico Legislative Lottery Scholarship, Bridge Scholarship, or College Affordability Grant. Active duty and veterans qualify for military benefits under the Yellow Ribbon Program. Federal Work-Study positions are available via OneStop for at least $9.25 hourly. The Western Undergraduate Exchange PLUS program offers in-state tuition for residents of surrounding states like Arizona and Texas. Institutional awards, such as the Regents Scholarship, Amigo Scholarship, Woodward Scholars Program, and Success Grant, also help lower loan debt.

Majoring in Engineering at UNM

Since 1906, the School of Engineering has grown in the state-of-the-art Centennial Engineering Center to provide nine bachelor’s, 12 master’s, and 10 doctoral programs. Technical expertise is developed in NSF-funded, professor-led research that generates over $32 million yearly. With a 17:1 student-faculty ratio, students actively engage in facilities like the Center for Emerging Energy Technologies. UNM also belongs to the Global Innovation Network for Entrepreneurship and Technology (GINET), which spans from America to Ecuador and Brazil. Two sample degrees are:

B.S. in Nuclear Engineering

UNM’s B.S. in Nuclear Engineering meets ABET standards for preparing undergrads to design safe, environmentally-sound nuclear fission systems for energy production. The 124-credit curriculum builds on physics and chemistry fundamentals for courses like radiation protection, thermodynamics, nuclear materials science, differential equations, statics, and transport phenomena. Students access the on-site AGN-201M nuclear training reactor and can complete co-operatives with institutes like Los Alamos National Laboratory.

M.S. in Biomedical Engineering

Available with a thesis or non-thesis option, the M.S. in Biomedical Engineering at New Mexico offers advanced training in the effective design of biological equipment for healthcare. The 48-credit curriculum is customized with a Molecular and Cellular Systems or Biomaterials and Biomechanics emphasis. Courses will include thermodynamics, nucleic acid engineering, tissue analysis methods, applied biology, and engineering management. Students could accelerate with the five-year B.S./M.S. Shared Credit Degree in Bioengineering.
