The University of Nevada- Reno (UNR) is a state university recognized as a National Tier 1 University by U.S. News & World Report. It was established as the State University of Nevada in 1874 and was originally located in Elko, NV. It moved to its current home in Reno in 1885 and awarded its first diplomas in 1891. Today, the university offers a broad range of degrees, both undergraduate and graduate, to more than 17,000 students annually throughout its nine schools and colleges. While each of these colleges offers its own unique programs, they also often work together to offer interdisciplinary degree programs and become involved in complex research projects.
University of Nevada, Reno Accreditation Details
The University of Nevada, Reno maintains a general, overall accreditation awarded by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). In addition, specific programs within the university and its colleges and schools have achieved accreditation for their subject areas. Among these, the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Engineering degree program is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC). In addition, degree programs offered within the College of Engineering, including the Bachelor of Science degree already mentioned, are accredited by the Engineering Accrediting Commission of ABET. Bachelor degrees that are covered by this accreditation are offered in Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.
University of Nevada, Reno Application Requirements
Incoming freshman at UNR must have graduated from an accredited or approved high school and have taken at least four units in English and three units in each of mathematics, social studies, and natural sciences while maintaining a minimum weighted GPA of 3.0 in these core subjects. First-time freshman also need to take either the SAT or the ACT. Minimum scores on these tests are required for prospective freshman that do not meet the 3.0 GPA requirement. In this case, the student would need a minimum of 1120 as a new SAT Critical Reading and Math combined score or a minimum ACT composite score of 22.
Transfer students wishing to attend UNR must have a minimum maintained GPA of 2.5 in all previous college coursework and have achieved at least 24 credits in previous coursework from an accredited college or university. Students seeking to enter UNR with less than 24 credits of previous coursework may still transfer the college credits but are also considered freshman and must meet the additional requirements for freshman admission.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Undergraduate students who are also residents of Nevada pay $219.25 per credit hour, plus several additional fees charged per semester, including a health center fee, counseling services fee, and a student union fee. Out-state-residents are charged $228.00 per credit hour and a lump sum fee of $6,995.00 per semester when enrolled in seven or more credits. These fees can be offset by freshman discount programs such as Nevada Advantage, a reduced tuition program offered to first-time freshman from one of the 14 qualifying states, all located in the western part of the country and including Alaska and Hawaii, or from the two qualifying U.S. territories of Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands. The Nevada Advantage program is good for four consecutive years.

Engineering Degrees Available at the University of Nevada, Reno
The College of Engineering at UNR offers nine undergraduate degrees in the various areas of engineering and seven each at the level of Masters and doctoral, many of which build on the Bachelor of Science degrees in their area. For any given engineering degree, coursework will have a strong emphasis on mathematics and the sciences. The Bachelor of Science degrees within this college are offered in the following subjects:
