In 1880, Charles and Augustus Storrs donated land and money to the Connecticut legislature. The purpose of the brother's gift was to start an agricultural school and the legislature accepted the gift in 1881. Using a former orphanage, farmland with barns and $6,000, the Storrs Agricultural School was established with classes beginning on September 28, 1881. In 1893, the school was renamed Storrs Agricultural College and permitted women to attend. That same year, the school became Connecticut's land-grant college. In 1899, it was renamed Connecticut Agricultural College, becoming Connecticut State College in 1933 and gaining university status in 1939 when it was renamed University of Connecticut.
Today, the University of Connecticut is one of the top research universities in the country with more than 30,000 students enrolled. U.S. News & World Report has ranked the University of Connecticut as one of the top 25 public universities in the country.
In an effort to support the diverse student population, the University of Connecticut offers the Rainbow Center, a family-like environment designed to promote inclusion. University of Connecticut Application Requirements
Students who have not earned college credit after high school graduation are considered freshmen. Students must complete the Common or Coalition Application and pay the admission fee. Students must submit an essay and official high school transcripts as well as official ACT or SAT scores. Students may submit up to two letters of recommendation although they are optional.
Students who have completed 12 or more credits are considered transfer students. They must have a 2.7 or higher cumulative grade point average in coursework completed at other universities and must be in good standing at those schools. Students must complete the UConn Application or the Common Application, although the UConn application is preferred for transfer students. Students must provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended as well as official high school transcripts and official SAT or ACT scores. Students must also submit an essay.
Students who wish to apply for graduate school must hold a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university. Students must provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended and must have a 3.0 grade point average for all undergraduate studies. Some programs may also require that students provide official graduate test scores as well.
University of Connecticut Tuition and Financial Aid
Full-time undergraduate tuition at the University of Connecticut is $11,998 for in-state students and $34,066 for out-of-state students. Graduate tuition is $1,294 per credit hour for in-state students and $1,867 per credit hour for out-of-state students.
Financial aid is available in the form of grants, scholarships, loans and work-study. Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to qualify for any financial assistance.

Women's Gender and Sexuality Studies
The Women's Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University of Connecticut is a flexible, interdisciplinary program that is devoted to pursuing knowledge related to gender and sexuality in cross-cultural contexts. The program combines methods and insights of academic disciplines throughout the university with special focus on feminist studies, gender studies and the study of sexuality. Courses focus on changes in a culture that is diverse and constantly changing. The program helps students gain a clearer understanding of individuals with diverse sexualities and genders as well as racial, ethnic, class and religious differences throughout society. Students are able to participate in many programs offered through the Rainbow Center to gain hands-on learning in the degree field. Graduates from the program have found positions in social service agencies, business, law, education and journalism. The growing focus on changes in gender, sexuality and racial relations is discussed as part of the degree program. Students are able to apply their studies, not only to their professional life, but to their private lives as well, gaining a better understanding of what it means to promote gender and sexual justice in the workforce as well as the community.
