Southern Methodist University appears in these rankings:
Students with ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, may feel that attending college is an insurmountable challenge, but it doesn't have to be. With many colleges and universities now recognizing the rise in the number of students dealing with this condition, as well as other learning challenges, students can find a corresponding increase in programs available to help them succeed in a college environment. Thanks to establishments like Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX, college for students with learning differences no longer has to seem like an impossible dream.
Southern Methodist University, or SMU, is a private, liberal arts university that serves approximately 11,000 students annually. Founded by what is now the United Methodist Church, the university is nonetheless nonsectarian and committed to academic freedom and open inquiry. The Altshuler Learning Enhancement Center, located in the Lloyd All Sports Center, is available to help all students transition into the academic culture of the university and to work with individual students to overcome challenges associated with both learning differences and the rigors of balancing athletics with academics.
Southern Methodist University Accreditation Details
Southern Methodist is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award degrees ranging from baccalaureate to doctoral, as well as several professional certificates. In addition, as a global research university, several individual schools and degree programs are accredited by agencies that oversee their particular subject matter. These include ABET accreditation for the Lyle School of Engineering and the Commission on the Accrediting of the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada accreditation for the Perkins School of Theology.
Southern Methodist University Application Requirements
Students applying for undergraduate admissions have the options of applying direction to SMU through an online application process or by forwarding an already completed Common Application or Apply Texas application, created in advance through the appropriate app. Whichever method the student chooses, there is a required $60.00 application fee that must be submitted when applying. Students should then forward high school transcripts, standardized test scores, a counselor recommendation form, and an extracurricular resume.
Once all documentation is received, Southern Methodist University takes a holistic approach to reviewing the entire package, not just GPA and SAT or ACT test scores, although these are certainly factors in the decision-making process. While no specific minimums are given as a guarantee of admission, students should provide proof of college preparation coursework taken throughout their high school career and provide their best possible scores on the standardized test of choice, whether the old SAT, new SAT, or ACT.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Undergraduate tuition rates vary according to the number of credit hours taken in any given term. For undergraduate students taken from one to 11 credit hours per semester, tuition is charged at a rate of $1,946.00 per credit hour, plus the general student fee assessed per term at a rate of $248.00 per credit hour, to a maximum of $2,952.00. For students taking between 12 and 18 credit hours per term, tuition is assessed at a flat rate of $23,297.00, plus the general student fee. Students taking more than 18 credit hours in any given term are assessed the flat rate of $23,297.00 plus $1,495.00 per credit hour beyond 18. Again, this is plus the general student fee assessed across the board.
Financial aid is available in the form of scholarships, grants, loans, and payment plans, all intended to provide the most opportunity to eligible students who need help paying for a college education at SMU. First year students are encouraged to apply as early as possible and before the January 15 deadline for priority consideration for academic and leadership scholarships, both those offered directly by SMU and others. In addition, students are encouraged to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, to be eligible for all the various forms of aid that may be available to them. The financial aid advisors at SMU work with each student to determine the best way to an affordable education.
The Altshuler Learning Enhancement Center
Within Southern Methodist University is the Altshuler Learning Enhancement Center, or A-LEC for short. The function of this center is to help all students entering SMU to transition successfully to college life by providing counseling and tutoring services as needed, but also to provide specific services for student athletes struggling to balance college athletics with challenging academics and for making it possible to succeed in college for students with learning differences. This latter function is offered through their subdivision offering Disability Accommodations and Success Strategies, or DASS.
DASS works with students to have reasonable accommodations, whether the disability is considered a learning difference, physical disability, psychiatric condition, or something else. Working with the American with Disabilities Act, this office evaluates and accommodates students who find themselves with a condition that significantly impacts their ability to learn and take on the daily challenges of college life. It is up to the student to make the first contact with this office and request services of this nature.
For students specifically suffering from learning and attention deficit disorders, such as ADHD, services offered included study skills instructions, self-advocacy skills, organization strategies, time management procedures, and sometimes even general mentoring. Tutoring is also available through the Learning Enhancement Center to all students and may be particularly effective for students with these specific learning challenges. Other options are student support groups and academic workshops, all designed to help every student gain the greatest chance of success at SMU.
College for students with learning differences is possible with more and more schools and universities realizing the increasing need for support services such as those described above. Whether the preference is for a public state university education or a more private and secular one, students have more choices and options than ever for higher education success. Southern Methodist University is a solid choice of global research university offering a high quality education for all, regardless of physical or psychological challenges.
