Southeastern Louisiana State University is located in the small town of Hammond, LA. Being located in a small town provides students with a little community of their peers who are engaged in learning and working towards their degrees. The campus has recently become a smoke-free campus and serves close to 16,000 students each year while offering more than 60 different degree programs. It also provides the feel of a small college while being a well-respected, quite large, university in a close-knit small town environment.

Southeastern was originally established in 1925 as a junior college, and it was previously known as Hammond Junior College. It was a very small school at this time with only 40 students and 5 faculty members. In 1927 the school purchased the 15 acre Hunters Leake estate to begin building upon, as growth was imminent. Only a year later, the junior college became Southeastern Louisiana College and purchased 60 more acres connected to the original 15 acres to provide a suitable campus for students. By 1946, the school acquired 275 more acres of land to expand their campus, and by 1970 the governor named the school Southeastern Louisiana University. Now that Southeastern has been serving students in their higher educational needs for more than 75 years, they provide students with the ability to obtain degrees in more than 60 different areas ranging from associates to doctorates.
