Oklahoma State University was approved by the Oklahoma Territorial Legislature and was established as the Oklahoma Territorial Agricultural and Mechanical College in December 1890. It was a land-grant institution which the act specified must be located within Payne County. Stillwater won the right for the college to be located in their town. Once Oklahoma received statehood in 1907, the school became Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College.
For the first two-and-a-half-years, classes were held in various churches. Old Central was dedicated on June 15, 1894. The first commencement was held in 1896. Williams Hall, the first building on campus to have electricity, was referred to as the "Castle of the Prairies" due to its turreted architecture.
When World War II began, Oklahoma A&M was one of six schools selected by the United States Navy to give the Primary School in Electronics Training Program. The program began in March 1942 and, each month, a new group of Navy students arrived for three months of 14-hour day concentrated electrical engineering study. The training continued until 1945, providing education for more than 7,000 students.
The school became Oklahoma State University in 1957. Today, there are more than 35,000 students enrolled.

Oklahoma State University Application Requirements
Students who have not earned college credit after high school graduation should complete an online application and submit the required essays. Students must also submit documentation of leadership and community involvement activities. Official high school transcripts as well as SAT or ACT scores must be provided.
Students who have attempted at least seven credits after high school graduation are considered transfer students. Students must complete an application and provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. Students must also submit official high school transcripts as well as ACT or SAT scores if they have less than 24 college credits. Students with between 7 and 23 credits must follow freshmen admission requirements and must have a 2.25 GPA. Students who have 24 to 59 credits must have a 2.25 GPA and students with more than 60 hours or hold an associate's degree must have a GPA of 2.0.
Graduate applicants must have a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university. Students must submit an application as well as one official transcript from all colleges or universities attended. Some programs may also require standard graduate test scores. Students should check with a graduate advisor before applying.
Oklahoma State University Tuition and Financial Aid
Undergraduate tuition for residents is $164.75 per credit hour and $635.50 for non-residents. Graduate tuition is $209.70 for residents and $825.05 for non-residents.

Oklahoma State University offers a five-year ABET accredited Bachelor of Architectural Engineering program. The program's objective is to provide basic and professional education to engineering students in building-related structural engineering. The primary focus of the program is providing students with the skills and knowledge for creating safe, economically designed buildings, but students are also exposed to basic engineering principals. Students develop the ability to design and conduct experiments as well as to interpret data. Students design a system, component or process to meet desired needs and have the ability to function on a team. Students understand ethics and responsibility.
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering
Students who enter the Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering program have the option of choosing specialized studies which include:
- Biomechanical Option – Integrates biology into the design of machines and mechanics related to biological materials like soil and plants. They may develop off-road equipment, sensors or intelligent machines related to biomechanics.
- Bioprocessing and Food Processing Option – Emphasizes engineering of biochemical processes. Students develop skills in life and physical sciences in order to enter careers involving plant systems, mammalian systems, bioenvironmental systems or industrial biological processes into commercial production.
- Environmental and Natural Resources Option – Combines engineering and biology concepts in order to design and analyze systems designed to protect water, soil or other natural resources.
The Chemical Engineering program focuses on principles employed when materials change form, state or composition. Students develop an understanding of chemical and physical behavior of molecules. Students develop the skills and knowledge to design, operate and control processes that produce materials and energy. Faculty members hold doctorate degrees and many have received national honors by professional societies. Students may also participate in clubs and organizations that help them develop a strong network that will continue with them after graduation. Graduates have found careers in refining, automotive factories, manufacturing and biomedical organizations.
Students in the Civil Engineering program develop the skills and knowledge to apply technical knowledge, engineering principles, communication skills and personal attributes to succeed in the civil engineering profession. Students develop an understanding of mathematics, science and engineering as well as the ability to design and conduct experiments along with the ability to analyze interpret data. Students are able to design systems, components or processes to meet desired within realistic constraints. Oklahoma Sate University offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. Students must declare an area of specialization prior to entering their junior year. Students develop a comprehensive understanding of electrical engineering and creates a plan of study in consultation with an ECE faculty member.
