Mount St. Joseph University opened its doors in 1829 after being established by the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati. The Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati is a religious organization that dates back to Elizabeth Ann Seton who was the first canonized saint in North America. Initially, the school was known as St. Peter's Academy before being renamed St. Mary's Academy. The school was renamed Mount St. Joseph in 1906 when it moved to the Mount St. Joseph property in Delhi Township.

In 1920, the school was granted formal approval for college curriculum and opened their doors to the first 20 students in 1920. This was the first Catholic institute of higher learning for women in southern Ohio. Significant growth led the school to need more space. The Sisters of Charity decided to develop property at the intersection of Delhi and Neeb Roads. The new campus opened in 1962 and adult education was added in the 1970s, further growing the enrollment, with both men and women attending.

In 1972, the college was incorporated under a Board of Trustees but remains a ministry sponsored by the Sisters of Charity. The school gained university status in 2013, becoming Mount St. Joseph University as of July 1, 2014.

Mount St. Joseph University was named one of the top ten universities in the United States for Excellence in Assessment and is ranked among the top four in Ohio for non-traditional students by It is also named as a Military Friendly Designation by G.I. Jobs Magazine. U.S. News and World Report has been ranked one of the top colleges and universities in the Midwest for 15 consecutive years and was named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll in 2011.

Mount St. Joseph University Application Requirements

Students who have not earned college credit after high school are considered freshmen. They must have been enrolled in a college prep high school curriculum, be able to provide evidence of leadership and be involved in extracurricular activity. Students must complete an application and pay the fee. Students may complete the application online or may print and mail it to the university. Students must provide a secondary school report and submit an official transcript. Students must also provide official SAT and ACT scores. Letters of recommendation and personal essays may be provided but are not required.

Transfer students are those who have been out of high school for less than four years, have completed 12 semester hours of college work and at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA may apply to attend Mt. St. Joseph University. Students must complete an application and pay the application fee. Students must complete an official college transcript from all colleges and universities attended. Students must also provide official high school transcripts as well as ACT/SAT scores.

Mount St. Joseph University Tuition and Financial Aid

Undergraduate tuition at Mount St. Joseph University is $28,100 per year. Graduate tuition varies depending on the program the student plans to attend. Financial aid is available in the form of scholarships, grants, loans and work-study programs. In order to apply for financial aid, students must contact the Financial Aid Office to learn what they need to apply.

Mount St. Joseph Project EXCEL

The Mount St. Joseph Project EXCEL program is a support system designed for students who suffer from a learning disability including ADHD. The program began in 1982 and has proven to be a hsuccessful intervention program for student who may face barriers to college education. Students are able to address learning challenges, acquire skills and achieve their academic goals.

In order to attend the Mount St. Joseph Project EXCEL program, they must have been diagnosed with a language-based learning disability or ADHD. Space in the program is limited which means each applicant is evaluated so that the student admitted will benefit the most from what the program offers.

The program helps traditional-age students transition from high school to college, helping them develop learning strategies as well as skills that help them compensate for their disability. This allows them a better chance at success in the university setting which is significantly different than the secondary school setting. College often includes many distractions which can make it difficult for students with ADHD and other disabilities succeed academically.

The program offers students adult professional tutoring and monitoring of their progress as well as scheduled consultations to help them develop better time management skills and organization. Students complete a two-credit course called "Study for Success" and there is direct instruction in strategies known to improve academic performance, including content area reading as well as coping skills.

Students have access to and instruction in technology as well as speech recognition software to help them throughout their college experience. Students who are interested can also join the Mount St. Joseph EXCEL Crew Club. Reasonable accommodations are provided at no charge to help students succeed at the university. Students with learning disabilities and ADHD are also provided advocacy assistance based on the nature of their impairment and how it could impact the student's learning ability. Students are able to choose any major offered at the university but must meet admission requirements for the program they choose.
