Economic Scholarships

West of the Mississippi River, in the city of Columbia, Missouri, sits the highly-esteemed school known as the Missouri University of Science and Technology. The school was founded in 1870, as the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, but underwent different name changes throughout the years, finally settling on the current one in 2008. When they first opened, the only subjects studied were those in its previous name: mines and metallurgy.

The school was built very close to the Southeast Missouri Lead District, a facility that makes roughly 70 percent of the nation's primary supply of lead, accompanied by a significant amount of its zinc. Official classes first began in a nearby high school. There were 28 students in the first enrollment, and in 1874, the school had its first three graduates. They then bought a building, today known as the ‘Rolla Building,' in 1875, which is now used as the Mathematics and Statistics Department's library. More buildings were added, and then, in 1995, the entire school went through a two-million-dollar renovation.

Throughout the years, the school has expanded its programs and currently offers degrees in engineering, science, business, and math. There are 61 certificate programs, 34 Bachelor degrees, 33 Master degrees, and 29 Doctoral degrees. It is a public space-grant university, deeming it one of 52 institutions in the country known for their outer space-related research. Its student population has flourished as they now enroll about 8,800 each semester. The university operates a nuclear reactor on campus for research and development, the first to become operational in all of Missouri, and they offer 16 different engineering degree programs, the most of any school in the country. They boast their structured class sizes with an average student body of 29 to a class, and a student to faculty ratio of 17 to one.

Missouri University of Science and Technology Accreditation Details

Missouri S&T is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, which first granted them accreditation on January 1, 1913. Their accreditation is given on an institutional aspect, therefore covering all programs and departments of the university.

There are also several separate institutions that have accredited various programs. The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business accredits the school's Business Administration, as well as Information Science and Technology program, and first did so for both in 2012. The Commission on English Language Program of Accreditation began accrediting the school's Intensive English program in 2015. Missouri's Department of Elementary and Secondary Education began accrediting their Teacher Education program in 2010. And lastly, the Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology has accredited the school's various engineering programs, from aerospace engineering to petroleum engineering, dating back to the year 1936.

Missouri University of Science and Technology Application Requirements

Every fall, Missouri S&T enrolls about 1,300 freshmen from every single county in Missouri, from all 50 states in the U.S., and from over 50 countries throughout the world. Those graduating high school that plan to apply, should review these requirements and ensure they meet them:

• Four years/units of English, one of which may be specifically related to debate or speech, and two that emphasize composition and written skills.

• Four years/units of Math (Algebra I and beyond only.)

• Three years/units of Social Studies. These may include American or World History, Government, Democracy Principles, and courses that are similar.

• Three years/units of Science, one of which must include a laboratory course.

• One year/unit in Fine Arts.

• Two years/units of a foreign language, the only requirement being that they are two units in the same language.

Students will also be considered using a combination of what they achieve on either the ACT or SAT, their class rank, and their grade point average (GPA.) If the total sum of these three scores is:

• 120 or above: The student is generally admissible to the university. Some students, however, may need remediation and/or reduced schedules, based on the school's placement processes.

• 119-100: The student might be admitted, but they will automatically receive a recommendation for remediation, a reduced schedule, as well as enhanced advising.

• 99 or below: The student is typically admissible, but only after continued academic education outside of Missouri S&T. Students with scores in this range are strongly urged to apply to the school through their Transfer Assistance Program.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Missouri S&T was ranked number one in the entire nation for affordability toward out-of-state students, and number three for in-state students, according to Newsweek. The school is also well-known for its value in education, proving year after year that their students graduate and achieve higher starting salaries. Payscale ranked them as number seven in the nation for starting salaries out of public institutions.

Tuition rates for the academic school year, based on 28 credit hours over a two-semester period, are as follows:

• Missouri Resident - $7,734 (tuition) + $9,780 (room & board) = $17,514

• Out-of-State Resident - $23,850 (tuition) + $9,780 (room & board) = $33,630

The total estimated cost of attendance, based on the set fees, possible fees related directly to degrees, books and supplies, personal expenses, and transportation fees, totals to about $23,782 for in-state students, and $39,898 of out-of-state. There is a calculator on the university's main website that will help better calculate costs for the individual needs of the student, which includes considering whether the student has a scholarship.

Engineering Program at the Missouri University of Science and Technology

Freshmen interested in partaking in any of the undergraduate engineering degree programs will automatically be enrolled into the Freshman Engineering Program, where students will first enroll in a mandatory set of courses, over the period of two or three semesters, that are required by every single engineering program at the school.

Some of the courses that a student joining the Freshman Engineering Program will take are:

• Calculus for Engineers I and II

• General Chemistry and General Chemistry Lab

• Engineering Physics I

• Lab and Safety Hazardous Materials

• Engineering Design with Computer Application

After successful completion of the Freshman Engineer Program, students will then apply to a specific engineering department. However, students in the program may choose a preferred major, prior to completion of the program, if desired. Freshman Engineering sets the foundation for students to make informed decisions, regarding their majors and career choices. They are constantly challenged to explore their own strengths, goals, and desires as individuals as they are introduced, personally, to all the different departments on campus, and attend the presentations put on by each one.

There are 15 different undergraduate engineering degree programs to choose from, once the Freshman Engineering Program is complete, which include:

• Aerospace Engineering

• Computer Engineering

• Electrical Engineering

• Mechanical Engineering

• Nuclear Engineering

Students will be assigned an engineering faculty member to advise them during their first year attending, which will serve as their source of information on all aspects of engineering programs. They will help with selecting the correct courses, making academic choices, as well as finding and utilizing various resources at the Missouri University of Science and Technology.
