The 100 Most Affordable Small Colleges in America

Mayville State University is a former normal school in Mayville, North Dakota. The state founded the university in 1889 and classes opened that same year. After gaining approval in the 1960s to add bachelor's degrees to its curriculum, it went from Mayville State Normal School to Mayville State Teachers College. The university did not expand outside of teaching programs until the 1970s, but it experienced even more growth in the 1980s. The college added an MBA program and undergrad business programs, which helped enrollment grow and led to it becoming MSU. The university renovated a number of its buildings and constructed new buildings in the 2000s and 2010s to modernize its campus.

MSU is one of the smallest members of the North Dakota University System. With just over 1,100 students, it's also one of the smallest colleges in the state. Despite its small size, it provides students with six athletic organizations that they can join and even more clubs and organizations. Cheerleading, volleyball, basketball and softball are open to women, and teams for men include basketball, football and baseball. MSU offers more than 30 degree programs, including both associate's and bachelor's degrees. It also offers dozens of minors and several online degree programs too.

Mayville State University Accreditation Details

Regional accreditation like Mayville State University has is important for several reasons. The United States Department of Education forbids colleges without regional accreditation from allowing students to get government financial aid. The regional accreditation that MSU has comes from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Those studying education or enrolling in a teaching program should look for specialized accreditation.
