Lamar University, commonly referred to as Lamar or LU, is a public research institution located in Beaumont, Texas. It is a part of the Texas State University System. It has been nationally recognized for its excellent core curriculum and diverse study body. It focuses on hands-on learning at all levels and offers plentiful opportunities for research activities. Lamar strives to empower students with the necessary knowledge and skills to live rewarding lives and pursue successful careers. LU offers over 100 programs of study at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels. Lamar University was founded in 1923 as South Park Junior College and it started with 125 students. In 1932, the college's name changed to Lamar College to honor Mirabeau B. Lamar, who was the second president of the Republic of Texas and known as the "Father of Education" in the state. In 1951, the college's name changed to Lamar State College of Technology and it experienced significant growth throughout the 1950s and 1960s. In 1970, the college introduced its first doctoral program and in 1971 the college became Lamar University. Throughout the 1980s, the university was a part of the Lamar University System with branch campuses in Orange and Port Arthur. In 1995, LU joined the Texas State University System and it continued to grow. Lamar is now a recognized leader in online education and has been named a Doctoral Research University by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Today, LU is home to about 15,000 students. The U.S. News and College Report ranks Lamar University number 200 in its 2017 Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs.

Lamar University Accreditation Details

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges accredits Lamar University to grant bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. The Engineering Accreditation Commission of the ABET accredits the chemical engineering program at Lamar University.

Lamar University Application Requirements


Lamar University grants unconditional admission to individuals who receive a diploma from an accredited high school, finish a minimum of 14 high school credits in college preparatory courses, graduate in the top 10 percent of their high school class or score minimum composite score on standardized examinations, and meet the requirements of the State of Texas Uniform Admission Policy.

Engineering Programs at Lamar University

The College of Engineering at Lamar University offers programs to students seeking to make a difference in society. The university is ranked highly for employment opportunities in engineering fields after graduation. The university is conveniently located to industry nearby and it enables students to pursue a variety of co-op opportunities. The College of Engineering offers a variety of engineering programs at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree levels. The Bachelor of Science degree programs include chemical engineering, civil and environmental engineering, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, and mechanical engineering. The chemical engineering program requires 129 total semester hours and the core courses include engineering economics, thermodynamics, process analysis, quantitative analysis, reaction kinetics, and process control. The civil and environmental engineering program requires the completion of 122 semester hours and the core courses include mechanics of solids, surveying, structural analysis, geotechnical engineering, foundation engineering. Students must complete 120 semester hours in the electrical engineering program and the core courses include heat, electricity, and magnetism, circuits, electromagnetics, and electrical analysis. The completion of 121 semester hours is necessary for the industrial engineering program and the core courses include industrial management, production and inventory control, operations research, quality improvement, industrial and product safety. The mechanical engineering program requires 126 semester hours and core courses in mechanics of solids, fluid mechanics, design of mechanisms, mechanical design, thermal system design. The master's degree programs include chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, engineering management, environmental engineering, industrial engineering, and mechanical engineering. The chemical engineering program is offered as a Master of Engineering with no thesis or a Master of Engineering Science with a thesis. The master's degree programs require the completion of 36 semester hours of core and elective courses. Some programs also require a final comprehensive examination. The doctoral degree programs in any area of engineering require 70 semester hours beyond a bachelor's degree, creating and defending a dissertation, and passing a qualifying examination. The College of Business at Lamar University also offers a bachelor's degree in general business in industrial engineering.
