Hope International University is a private educational university located in Southern California that was founded in the late 1920s. Their academic mission is to empower students through quality higher education to serve the church and the community. This small university only has around 2,000 students spread around the world. Hope International University is associated with the Christian Churches and Churches of Christ, which are non-denominational religious groups. The original campus was in Long Beach, but it was moved to Fullerton to meet the growing needs of the college. The university is divided into five Colleges. These include the Colleges of Education, Arts and Sciences, Business and Management, Ministry and Biblical Studies and Psychology and Counseling.

Hope International University is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). They are also a member of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities. Religious degrees are accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE), which is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). The Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy is approved by the Board of Behavioral Sciences in California.
Hope University International Application Requirements
Students must submit a typical application that includes official high school transcripts and transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. Unofficial transcript copies are accepted. Students must submit their results of either the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT). The application requires a statement of purpose that touches on specific topics. First, the experiences that have shaped the student's personal goals related to faith, career and school. Second, how these goals and individual backgrounds promote the mission of the university. Third, the student must explain what factors are critically important when choosing a college. Finally, applicants must include non-relative references from a church leader and educator or employer.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The undergraduate program of 12 to 17 units per semester costs $14,750. This totals to $29,500 per year. Students who take over 17 units are charged $1,150 per unit. Part-time students who take one to 11 units will pay $1,290 per unit. The cheapest freshman housing is $4,800 per semester. Hope International University offers residential undergraduate freshmen exclusive scholarships like the Presidential Scholarship, which awards $12,000 per year for off-campus students and $16,000 every year for on-campus students. In order to be eligible, the freshman must have a 3.5 GPA and a 1100 SAT score or 24 ACT score. These students must maintain an annual GPA of 3.25 to remain eligible.
The Dean's Scholarship, which is also only for freshman, awards $10,000 per year for students who have a 2.75 GPA and either a 900 SAT or 19 ACT score. The minimum annual GPA is 2.5 for this scholarship. The AVID Scholarship for freshman awards $12,000 per year who students who participated in their high school AVID program for at least three consecutive years. The Hope Grant awards $1,000 to $7,000 per year for students who maintain a 2.5 GPA. The Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) awards up to $1,000 depending on financial need of the student. Pell Grants award up to $5,730 per year, depending on the financial need of the student and their specific cost of attendance.
The bachelor's degree through the Psychology and Counseling department gives students a diverse set of skills that can be used in the fields of teaching, counseling and psychology. This Bachelor of Science in Human Development contains two concentrations for students to choose from. First, the Community Mental Health and Counseling Concentration focuses on topics like abnormal psychology, case management, counseling theories, mental health interventions and psychology consultations. Students in this concentration will be prepared for jobs in research, forensic, counseling, mental health and employee assistance environments. Second, the Family Studies Concentration provides students with a broad knowledge base of children's social, physical, cognitive, and emotional development. Graduates of this program are prepared for jobs as school specialists, counselors, assistants and services coordinators. They may also find work in day cares, social service programs and special education centers. These two psychology based degrees feature standard classes in personality, organizational, experimental, biology and cross-culture psychology.
The Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy is a degree program of 60 units that integrates theory and practice through a Christian framework. Students gain communication, analytical research, theoretical teaching and clinical training skills. The curriculum includes clinical courses, academic studies, self-assessment measures and professional development opportunities. Most of the faculty members are past or current practitioners of their professional fields. Besides academic course requirements, students are assigned to community-based clinical training sites where they undergo hands-on training with real clients. The Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy is accredited by the Commissions on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE). This is the nationally recognized accrediting body for marriage and family therapy degree programs. This degree program meets the educational requirements of the Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) in the state of California, so graduates may immediately take their licensing examination after they complete the necessary 3,000 supervised hours.
