Florida Southern College is a small college in Lakeland, Florida. In addition to its full name, the campus also goes by the names of FSC, Southern and Florida Southern. Founded in 1883 as the South Florida Institute, it moved to a new location a few years later. The United Methodist Church then took over the support of the college, which is an affiliation that still exists. This campus moved multiple times over the year and to new cities in the state before settling in Lakeland. Princeton Review named its campus as the most beautiful college campus in the United States. That campus is home to one of the largest collections of buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the world.

As the college expanded over the years, it saw its curriculum expand to include more than 40 degree options for undergrads. It also established a number of graduate programs like a Master of Arts in Teaching as well as other education programs. Enrollment at the college includes more than 2,200 students. Only a small handful of those students are graduate students. Florida Southern has its own sports teams too and has more than 80 clubs and organizations for its students.

If you have credits that you earned in high school or at another campus, you'll want to make sure that the college you attend has regional accreditation, which will help you transfer those credits. FSC is one of a number of schools in the south with regional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and its Commission on Colleges. This public college also has accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and the Association to Advanced Collegiate Schools of Business for all its business and nursing programs.

Florida Southern College Application Requirements

Applying to Florida Southern is simple because you only need to complete three steps. You'll submit your application and all other information, follow the checklist the college offers to ensure you meet all requirements and then accept the college's offer. FSC accepts both the Common Application as well as its own application. If you want to focus on applying to this college, you can use the online system, which will let you log back in whenever you want. Using the Common Application allows you to use one application and the same information to apply to multiple schools.

In addition to the application, the college asks for a high school transcript that shows you took college prep classes. Those classes must include higher level math and science classes as well as English, social studies and foreign language courses. You will also need to write a personal statement or an essay and submit it with your application. FSC also requires an official SAT or ACT score as well as a letter of recommendation. That letter should come from either a teacher in your high school or your guidance counselor.

Tuition and Financial Aid

As an undergrad, you can take classes on a full-time or a part-time basis. Part-time students pay $970 per credit hour. You can also audit classes for less than $200 a credit hour, but you won't gain any course credit for audited classes. Full-time students pay around $17,000 a semester or around $34,000 a year. This figure includes an activity fee, a technology fee and the full cost of your tuition. Housing on the Florida Southern campus starts at $3,300 a year, but you'll also need to pay around $4,000 a year for a meal plan. Graduate students pay tuition rates of $410 per credit hour, which comes out to more than $18,000 a year. Some programs may cost slightly more.

Whether you enroll as an undergrad or graduate student, you can still get financial aid. Undergrads often qualify for more financial aid as well as different types of aid like acceptance into a work study program. You'll also have the chance to get grants that act as free money for college and loans that you'll need to pay back later. Loans are available for the parents of college students too. As a graduate student, you can look into the Teach grant program and take out student loans.

Education Programs

Florida Southern offers four key education programs for undergrads. Two of those programs are suitable for those who want to work with kids between the ages of kindergarten and high school. You can study either art education or music education. You can also major in elementary education to learn how to work with kids through sixth grade or secondary education to learn how to work with students through high school. The college offers a concentration in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) for those who want to work in more technical fields. You can also pick a concentration in a special type of education designed for working with students with special needs as well as exceptional students.

The music education program offered by the college requires that students audition before enrolling. This lets you show the college that you can play one or more instruments and that you have experience playing music. Your audition also acts as an application that helps the college decide whether you deserve one of its scholarships. Its art education program is similar and also has some scholarships available. This program allows you to spend a semester in a study abroad program, but you'll also find other programs that allow you to spend a weekend or a few weeks working on a project in another city.

FSC offers a variety of graduate programs in education too. There is a general Master of Art in Teaching program that allows those who didn't major in education to meet the requirements for teaching certification in Florida. This program also features flexible courses that make it easier for teachers to earn advanced degrees. Master of Education programs are also available in Collaborative Teaching and Learning and in Education Leadership.

Once you have a graduate degree, you can enroll in one of the college's doctoral programs. The college has a program in general education and education leadership. Florida Southern College designed these options as hybrid programs that give you the freedom to take some online classes at the same time that you take courses on its campus.
