Davidson College appears in these rankings:
Davidson College is a small liberal arts college in North Carolina. Located in the city of Davidson, the college has a gorgeous campus that sprawls across more than 600 acres. Students can take in the views of nearby Lake Norman while working in many buildings on campus, and the lake itself is a popular place for students to hang out at night and on weekends. Established in 1837, the college opened with an affiliation with the Presbyterian Church. Though that affiliation still exists today, the college operates independently and does not the strong rules and regulations that other religious colleges do. Despite being a popular college for a number of years, Davidson did not relax its admissions policies to admit females until the early 1970s.
Princeton Review calls Davidson a very selective school because it admits fewer than 20% of its applicants every year. Most of those students graduated within the top 10% of their classes and scored 30 or higher on the ACT or scored above 1950 on all sections of the SAT. U.S. News & World Report recognized Davidson for its teaching program and for its liberal arts background, and Forbes included the college on its annual list of the top colleges in America. When Washington Monthly released its own ranking of the best liberal arts colleges, it selected Davidson as the nation's 25th best liberal arts college.
Davidson College Accreditation Details
Some students focus too much on specialized accreditation when selecting a college or university specialized accreditation means that an organization granted accreditation to one or more degree programs. A good example of this is the American Psychological Association, which often grants accreditation to graduate and doctoral programs in psychology or counseling. Though Davidson College does not have specialized accreditation, it does have regional accreditation. This comes from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). With SACS accreditation, you can rest easy in knowing that you will earn a valuable degree and that you can transfer credits into and out of the college. This type of accreditation also gives students the right to apply for federal financial assistance through the FAFSA.
Davidson College Application Requirements
Davidson College recommends that students use the Common Application when applying. When you register an account with this site, you can input your information and use that info when applying to several schools at the same time. Though you can apply to every school that uses the Common Application, you'll still need to pay the application fee. Davidson charges a fee of $50 for all American citizens. You will also need to complete the Davidson writing supplement, which gives you the chance to show off your writing skills. If you do not want to use the Common Application, you can use either the paper application or the online application. The online application contains a page that you will need to print, sign and mail back to the college.
The college uses a selective process when looking at applicants. Those working on the admissions board will need to look at your test scores, extracurricular activities, grade point average and writing sample. Though the college goes not require an interview or letters of recommendation, it does require that you submit an official high school transcript and an official standardized test score. Early decision applicants must apply by the middle of November, but the deadline for all other applicants isn't until the beginning of April.
Tuition and Fees
The cost of tuition and all fees charged by Davidson College comes in at around $47,000 a year. Once you add in the price of your meal plan and dorm, you're looking at around $60,000 a year, which does not include any of the textbooks or supplies that you need. The college offers a range of meal plans and room types that can increase or decrease the amount you pay each year. While this is a little on the expensive side, more than 40% of all students qualify for need based financial aid. Need based financial aid is available to those who cannot afford college, while merit based aid is open to those who scored highly on one of the standardized tests and those who have a high GPA.
In the spring before you begin classes, complete the file the FAFSA online. Davidson will receive a copy of the form and determine the aid package given to you based off your responses. The Davidson Trust is a unique plan offered by the college that severely reduces the amount you pay out of pocket. This program uses a combination of grants and other aid types to cover the difference between what you can afford to contribute and what you owe. Davidson introduced this program to keep students from taking out expensive loans. In addition to grants, the program will usually require that you work 10 or more hours each week on campus.
Studying at Davidson
Students attending Davidson College can choose one of 27 majors. This does not include the five pre-professional programs that the college offers in engineering, pre-medicine, pre-law and other topics. Those programs allow students to gain a better understanding of professional topics before enrolling in grad school, law school or medical school. Students can also select a minor from 23 different areas.
One of the top programs available at Davidson was its educational studies program, which received national recognition. The college eliminated the program in 2015 and announced plans to possibly bring back the program in later years based on student interest. This program is now only available as a minor. The program looks specifically at how teachers can help students and the types of policies used throughout history in schools. Depending on the major and minor that students choose, they may have the opportunity to obtain a teaching license in the state.
Davidson also offers a major in gender and sexuality studies, which is one of the only programs of its type in the country. Courses in this program include human reproduction, biology of HIV and AIDS, social diversity in education, the science of sex and feminist theories. Davidson College allows gender and sexuality studies majors to take courses in the performing arts to complete the credits needed for graduation, including courses on Chinese film, female playwrights and Latin American writers.
