20 Best Value Colleges for Students with Learning Disabilities

Though established in 1879, Curry College originally operated under the name of the School of Elocution and Expression. Anna Baright founded the college and created a curriculum designed to make young women better speakers and writers. After marrying Samuel Silas Curry, the school became the School of Elocution and added Curry and other famous men of the time to its board. Though Baright opened the school in Boston, it later moved to a smaller town in Massachusetts that awarded students more privacy and gave the campus more room to grow. The college changed its name in later years to honor the work that Curry did in its early years.

The college is home to the Curry College Program for Advancement of Learning. Established in 1970, this was the first program in the nation designed for students with learning disabilities. As the popularity of this program grew, more professors moved to the area to work with the students enrolled in the college. It now ranks as one of the top programs in the world for college students with dyslexia. Curry College took over the operations of a normal school in Boston, which now offers classes for future teachers who want to work with students in preschools and elementary schools. It also took over a nursing school and created four-year programs that have accreditation from a top professional organization. Curry College offers a continuing education program for adult students and a graduate school that features four majors too.

Curry College Accreditation Details

If you need help covering the costs that you face as a new student, you need to make sure that the college you want to attend has regional accreditation. This is what the United States Department of Education looks for when deciding whether a college can accept federal funds. Curry College has its regional accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). In addition to an extensive investigation prior to granting accreditation, the NEASC will also investigate the college before renewing its accreditation, which happens once every decade. The nursing program offered by the college also has accreditation. This accreditation comes from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

Curry College Application Requirements

When it comes time to apply to college, Curry College gives you three options. You can print out a copy of the application from the college's website and mail the completed application back to the school. If you want to apply online, you can use the college's website or the Common Application. With the Common Application, you simply enter your basic information once and let the website automatically fill out applications for you. This cuts down on the time it takes to apply to multiple schools and makes the application process more easier. The college has an early action deadline of December 1 and a regular decision deadline of April 1. Applying early action lets you know in the late winter or early spring if the college accepted you.

Though you do need to submit an application, you also need to pay a $50 fee that is due before you can file the application. You also need to supply an official score from the ACT or SAT and an official high school transcript. If you attended any college before applying, you need to submit a transcript from that college too. Other requirements include a letter of recommendation and an essay. The letter of recommendation must come from your guidance counselor or a teacher in your high school. Your essay must be 250 words or less and answer a question listed in the application.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Curry College charges a total of around $38,500 a year for both resident and commuter students. This price includes a comprehensive fee of around $1,800. The fee gives you access to all facilities and resources on the campus. You can take a maximum of 18 credits each semester. Any credits that you take over this amount will cost $1,226 per credit. Part-time students, who are those taking fewer than 12 credits per semester, pay the same amount per credit hour and a $400 comprehensive fee. The school charges additional fees for those enrolled in the Curry College Program for Advancement of Learning.

Students living in one of the college's residence halls must pay extra for room or board, which adds thousands of dollars to their final costs. Applying for financial aid lets you get money you can use for room and board as well as your tuition. Use the FAFSA with Curry College listed as the college you want to attend on the form. Curry can give you grants from the state or federal government, loans and a spot in its work study program. The college also offers various scholarships that you will need to apply for after submitting the FAFSA.

Curry College Program for Advancement of Learning

As a student with one or more learning disabilities, you will need to apply to the Curry College Program for Advancement of Learning. Also known as Curry College PAL, this program is open to students with dyslexia and other disabilities. You'll need to go through diagnostic testing or submit proof that you had testing in the past. The college also asks for your Individual Education Plan (IEP) that you developed with some professional help. There is a separate questionnaire that you can submit, which asks you about your past history. Unless you apply to the nursing program, you do not need to submit a standardized test score. The college offers information sessions that are open to students and their parents, which can help you find out more about the program and ask any questions that you have.

PAL courses can help students like yourself find strategies for doing work at the college level. You can sign up for a summer course that lets you live on the campus and get familiar with your surroundings before the fall semester starts. The program includes support services for students having troubles in school and advising help that lets you meet with an adviser to go over the program you want to study. The Curry College Program for Advancement of Learning includes support when it comes to exam time too that can let you take the exam in a quieter place or get more time to work on the test.
