Colorado State University-Global appears in these rankings:
Colorado State University-Global is the official name of the online campus that is part of Colorado State University. Founded in 2007, it received a large loan from CSU that allowed the new university to set up its infrastructure and hire the professors who would teach its students. It used the name CSU-Colorado during its early days to reflect its connection to the CSU system, but it later chose the name Colorado State University Global. Many refer to the campus as CSU-Global today to distinguish it from other schools in that system. The university became such a success that it paid back its original loan years earlier than it expected.
CSU-Global functions almost like a senior university. Instead of offering a number of lower level and introductory classes, it offers more advanced courses. The university expects that students will bring credits with them that they earned from other schools. It offers a College Level Examination Program (CLEP) that allows students to take classes that test them on the knowledge they gained from their past experiences. These exams allow students to earn credits for any professional work they did prior to enrolling, which then reduces the number of classes they must take. Students can also earn course credits for their past military service.
The university offers 14 bachelor's degree programs and more than 20 fields of study at the undergrad level. Students can also enroll in one of 12 master's degree programs and pick a specialization in more than 20 fields. An affiliate program allows students who work for specific employers to qualify for a 10% tuition discount. This includes employees of different states and those who work for major corporations. Since going live in 2007, CSU-Global saw its enrollment rise to include more than 19,000 students.
Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement Administration
Colorado State University-Global offers online degree programs at the undergrad and post-graduate levels. Of the 14 bachelor's programs that it offers online, one of the more popular is the one on criminal justice and law enforcement administration. Students who complete this program may qualify to enter the police academy and become a local police officer, but students may also find work in a government agency like the Department of Homeland Security. This program looks at some of the different ways to approach and think about crime, the unique needs that victims of crimes have and the ethical standards that those in the field must follow.
In addition to a general criminal justice program, students can also customize their degrees and select a concentration in one of more than 20 areas. The criminal forensics concentration is best for those who want to work in crime scene investigation, while the emergency management concentration can prepare students for working with FEMA and similar government organizations.
No matter what concentration a student chooses, the individual can look forward to taking some required classes like Research Methods for the Criminal Justice Professional, Law Enforcement and America Policing and Criminal Justice and the Constitution. All students must take a capstone class and a practicum class. Colorado State University-Global has a practicum requirement because the university wants graduates to gain more criminal justice fieldwork and practical experience.
Colorado State University-Global Accreditation Details
When looking at online colleges, it's especially important that students check for accreditation because some online campuses do not have this. CSU-Global has regional accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and its North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCACS). NCACS accreditation covers all the undergrad and graduate programs available online. Some of its degree programs have accreditation from other professional agencies too.
Colorado State University-Global Application Requirements
As CSU-Global allows students to complete their degrees online, it requires that all incoming students have at least 12 college credits that they can transfer into one of the university's degree programs. Students should also have a grade point average of at least 2.3 in all those classes. The university will accept advanced placement (AP) and similar credits that high school students earned.
Students who have a lower GPA and those who attended a college or university that lacked regional accreditation can receive provisional acceptance to the university. CSU-Global asks those students to write a statement of purpose that lists their reasons for choosing the university and the goals they hope to achieve while in college. They must also submit a recent resume that lists all educational and professional experiences they have.
Before granting provisional status, the university also asks that students take an online assessment exam. This exam takes around 30 minutes to finish and determines whether a student can handle college-level classes. Students who are 23 or older and never went to college may qualify for the university's first-time freshmen program. This is a newer program that allows students to complete all degree requirements online, even if they do not have any college credits they can transfer to the university.
Tuition and Financial Aid
CSU-Global believes that every student deserves opportunities for higher education, which is why it offers affordable tuition rates for all students. The university charges a flat rate of $350 per credit hour for undergrads and $500 per credit hour for graduate students. It does not charge any miscellaneous or hidden fees. Students can easily figure out how much their classes will cost based on the number of credits they want to take. The university offers eight-week classes that help students do more work in less time. Based on the number of credits that they transfer, students can complete a degree for around $31,000 total.
One way students can bring down their educational costs is through one of the university's discount programs. Those who work for partner companies automatically qualify for a 10% tuition discount. CSU-Global offers discounts for military students and their dependents too. Students can use the FAFSA and find out if they qualify for any government aid, but they can also use the institutional aid available from the university itself. Thirteen different scholarships are available for incoming students and continuing students. An academic excellence scholarship goes to students who have a GPA of 3.7 or higher, but other scholarships have less stringent requirements. Colorado State University-Global will also accept any external scholarships that incoming students received from other organizations.
