Capella University is a for-profit, online postsecondary school based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Within its programs, the university offers more than 2,100 flexible courses through two flexible online learning formats called FlexPath and GuidedPath.

Capella University was founded in 1993 by Stephen Shank and Dr. Harold Abel under the name The Graduate School of America. It opened to serve the needs of adult students who were working full time and needed a more flexible curriculum. The school was approved by Minnesota Higher Education Services Offices to award master's and doctoral degrees in human services, organization and management education, and interdisciplinary studies. It gained accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission in 1997. The school became Capella University in 1999 and enrollment exceeded 1,000 students. Also in 1999, the university began offering distance education programs. It gained approval to offer bachelor's degrees in 2000 and it continued to add additional programs throughout the early 2000's. In 2009, enrollment increased to more than 30,000 students. Many programs offered by Capella University gained professional accreditation from various accrediting entities. In 2015, the university has the largest new educational offerings launch in its history. In 2016, Capella University was awarded the Excellence in Assessment Award from the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment. Today, Capella University is home to more than 37,000 students.

Doctorate Programs in Information Technology at Capella University

The School of Business and Technology of Capella University offers a Doctor of Information Technology, Doctor of Philosophy in Information Technology, and Doctor of Business Administration with specialization in information technology management. The Doctor of Information Technology (DIT) focuses on the best practices and business problems and practical application in the actual world and how to solve those issues.

The program enables students to select the general program or a specialization in information cybersecurity, IT education, or project management. The program helps students gain the necessary abilities to succeed in their careers through a customized learning environment. Students perform scholarly research to recognize and evaluate IT issues and find potential solutions. The also develop consulting and teaching abilities in information technology. The program requires the completion of 82 credit hours, including 12 core courses, four specialization courses, a dissertation, and three residencies. The core courses include research and practice in information technology, research foundations, research design and methodology, information technology leaders as partners in organizational strategic planning, leading information technology strategic planning in complex and global environments, innovating information technology life cycle management processes in a changing environment, and information technology consulting practice seminar. The Doctor of Philosophy in Information Technology (PhD) enables students to gain a solid understanding of foundational theory and how it relates to information technology. It focuses on developing models or enhancing current models.

Similar to the DIT program, students are able to select the general information technology track or specialize in information technology education, project management, or information assurance and cybersecurity. The program requires the completion of 90 credit hours, including 15 core courses, five elective courses, three residencies, a dissertation, and a comprehensive examination. The core courses include research processes, theory, and practice in information technology, teaching practice seminar information technology education, management theory creation, survey of applied research methods, quantitative research techniques, advanced qualitative research, applied multivariate modeling, leading information technology strategic planning in complex and global environments, and guiding the implementation of information technology policies and processes. The Doctor of Business Administration in Information Technology Management provides students with advanced knowledge and skills to expand their know-how in the application of information technology policies and processes and investigate emerging trends in IT management. Students concentrate on multidisciplinary research to advance in IT management. The program requires the completion of 82 credits, including eight core courses, four specialization courses, one doctoral research project, and two residencies. The core courses include introduction to doctoral studies in business, becoming a business researcher, applied business research projects, global operations, financial decision making, marketing in connected world, contemporary issues impacting organizational success, and conceptualization strategies for applied business research.
