Canisius College is also featured in our ranking 50 Best Value Colleges for a Criminal Justice Degree.
Criminal Justice Major
Canisius College has one of the lowest ratios of professors to students out of all criminal justice programs in the nation. Students typically take classes with no more than 11 other people. The college also offers opportunities for majors in the form of internships and special clubs. Gamma Theta is a branch of the national honors society open to criminal justice majors. Members can attend lectures and hear from professionals working in the legal and criminology fields and they can take tours together. The society often tours local correctional institutes.
Though Canisius does not require that students do internships, it offers opportunities for those who want to get out in the field. Students can earn up to three credits for doing an internship over the course of a semester. Those who work more hours in the field or do longer internships qualify for more credits. Its students previously worked for both local and national organizations, including the United States Attorney General's Office, Erie County Sheriff's Department, Child Protective Services and United States Department of Probation and Parole.
To major in criminal justice, students must take 30 credits of required courses and some electives. Their required classes include Criminal Justice I and II, Criminal Law and Procedure, Criminal Justice Ethics and Research Methods in the Social Sciences. They can choose from a wide range of electives from this department such as Psychology and Law, Abnormal Psychology, Transnational Crime After 9/11, Deviant Behavior and Sociology of the City.
The college also offers four criminal justice tracks. The environmental justice and regulation track focuses on the ways that professionals prevent environmental crimes and how they prosecute criminals, while law enforcement prepares students for attending a police academy and becoming a police officer. Those in the law and justice track learn the skills they will need in law school or to work in a correctional field. The college also offers a corrections track that includes elements of social work and juvenile justice. Canisius College can declare a major in both criminal justice and psychology too.
About Canisius College
Canisius College is a private college in New York founded by the Society of Jesuits. The Society previously held services on a campus in Buffalo. When issues arose regarding who owned and could use that church, they moved one and established St. Michael's Church and then decided to open a small college nearby. The college initially only accepted men and only offered classes for the children of German immigrants. Those immigrants wanted to provide their sons with the opportunities they did not have when they first came to the country. As the college grew, it would eventually change its admissions policy and accept young women. Its growth also led to the college introducing more programs and giving students the chance to earn full degrees.
The college now has an enrollment of more than 3,400 students, which includes more than 2,000 undergrads. U.S. News and World Report put the college at number 22 on its list of the best schools in the north. It also appeared on USNWR lists of the best colleges for veterans and the best value schools in the north. There are more than 90 organizations that students can join as well as some athletic teams that compete in Division I NCAA sports.
Canisius College Accreditation Details
Though the criminal justice program offered by this college does not have specialty accreditation, the program itself is covered by the school's regional accreditation. That accreditation comes from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). Not only does this allow students who need help to apply for financial aid, but it also gives students the right to transfer credits to the college and from Canisius to other schools. Students can take education, business and/or counseling courses that have accreditation too.
Canisius College Application Requirements
Students who want a quick response to their applications should apply prior to the early decision deadline of November 1. The college will typically send out acceptance letters within a few weeks of receiving a completed application packet. It also has a rolling admissions policy that allows students to apply whenever they want. As long as the college has space remaining for the coming year, it will accept students who submit their applications later in the year. Canisius will accept applications sent through its own system and those done through the Common Application.
There are only four requirements in addition to the application. Students must provide an official score from the ACT or the SAT and submit their official high school transcripts. If they are still in school when they apply, they can submit their unofficial transcripts. The college also asks for a personal essay of around 250 words. Though students can write about anything they want, they must demonstrate strong writing skills in that essay. They must also submit a recommendation form filled out by a high school guidance counselor. The college recommends that students also submit information on any extracurricular activities they participated in and a recommendation form filled out by a teacher.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Canisius College announced in 2017 that it would significantly lower its tuition rate in the future. Students applying in 2018 and later will now pay just $27,000 a year, which is the same rate charged by the university in 2008. This helps students from all backgrounds afford the cost of college. All students will pay fees of close to $1,500 per year too. Resident students who want to live on the Buffalo campus also pay around $11,000 a year for room and board.
The college offers both scholarships and grants for incoming undergrads. Once the college receives a student's application and FAFSA, it will determine whether that student qualifies for any merit-based aid. It will then automatically add those grants to the student's account. The grants available go to students who demonstrate that they need more help via the FAFSA. This form will also determine whether students qualify for federal or state aid, including other types of grants and student loans. Some of the college's scholarships require that students fill out separate applications. Canisius College recommends that students with an interest in its criminal justice program submit the FAFSA by the early spring and that they check out the college's own institutional aid.
