The California Institute of Technology is an independent science and engineering university. Because it is focused on research and teaching, it has an enormous faculty of 300 professors who teach the 900 undergraduate and 1,000 graduate students. Altogether, there are around 900 Ph.D. level researchers who make this one of the world's leading scientific research and education institutions. The California Institute of Technology was founded back in 1891 under the name Throop University, but it transitioned through the names Throop Polytechnic Institute and Throop College of Technology before it officially received its current name in 1920.

The California Institute of Technology has six main divisions: biology, which includes biological engineering, chemistry, which includes chemical engineering and applied engineering. There are also the humanities and social sciences, geological and planetary sciences and physics, math and astronomy. Biology degrees include geobiology, neurobiology and computation systems. Chemistry majors include molecular biophysics, bioengineering and environmental engineering. Applied engineering degrees include aeronautics, computational mathematics, computer science and dynamic systems. It also includes civil, space, medical and mechanical engineering. California Institute of Technology Application Requirements

Because it is small and highly selective, approximately 230 new freshmen and 15 transfer students are accepted every year. Incoming freshmen must submit high school transcripts that include three years of English, four years of math and calculus and one year of physics, chemistry and U.S. history or government. California Institute of Technology does not provide credits other college courses taken before enrollment. All incoming students must take a math and physics exam before they are allowed to enroll in classes. Students may receive credit for previous courses taken based on the results of these exams.

First-year applicants must submit a Common Application Coalition Application with SAT/ACT writing scores, SAT Math scores, and SAT science exam scores in physics, chemistry and ecological and molecular biology. Students must also submit a secondary school report and one math or science and one humanity or social sciences teacher evaluations. The admissions board first considers the student's academic ability by examining their grades, test scores and teacher recommendations. When it comes to students with poor math or science test scores, the admissions board will search for other notable abilities. These students must demonstrate a lifelong interest in math, science, engineering or technology. Students who have done research are encouraged to submit a research mentor evaluation with their research paper.

California Institute of Technology Tuition and Financial Aid

Students who attend the standard nine months of the year full-time will pay approximately $66,000. Tuition is around $45,800, fees is $1,700 and housing is $7,900. Meals will cost $900, books and supplies $ 1,300 and personal expenses $1,900. All new undergraduates must pay a one-time $500 orientation fee. Three types of financial aid are available to students to help cover the costs of attendance. These include grants and scholarships, which are financial gifts that are awarded based on demonstrated financial need, and loans that must be repaid with interest after graduation. There are two types of work-study programs available that allot money to students who are employed on-campus or at other eligible organizations.

Most financial aid is awarded through grants that do not have to earned or repaid. The institute does not have a merit aid program, so all grants and scholarships are need-based. Undergraduate students must fill out a financial aid application to be automatically considered local scholarships and federal grants, but the application process for state grants varies. All undergraduate students who submit a financial aid application are automatically considered for the work-study program, which typically provides $2,500 per year. However, new freshmen will only be allowed to earn $1,350 because they are not allowed to work during the fall term. The Federal work-study program provides employment opportunities at Caltech and various public agencies.

California Institute of Technology Chemical Engineering

The chemical engineering program is designed to train students to become leaders in chemical engineering research or successful graduate students. Most graduates go on to work in the fields of science, academia, business, engineering and public service, so they are provided with a broadly rigorous curriculum that maintains a proper balance between laboratory experiences and classroom lectures. Engineering programs strive to develop creativity, self-reliance, professional ethics and an appreciation of continual intellectual growth. This chemical engineering education prepares student to combine knowledge from many subjects in order to successfully design systems, processes and experiments.

During the third and fourth year, chemical engineering students choose a specialization in either materials, environmental, biomolecular or process systems engineering. Students who decided to finish a senior thesis will be able to conduct independent research and design an experiment in one of the senior laboratories. During their first years, students will take classes in chemical synthesis, organic chemistry, separation processes, applied mathematics and chemical engineering computation. During the final years, students will study transport phenomena, scientific writing, physical chemistry, control of chemical systems chemical reaction engineering.

California Institute of Technology Famous Alumni and Programs

The California Institute of Technology has produced world famous faculty and alumni. Albert Einstein was a visiting professor at the institute for three winter terms during the 1930's. Frank Capra, the Academy Award winning director, graduated from the institute with a degree in chemical engineering. Paul MacCready, who is known as the father of human-powered flight, earned degrees in physics and aeronautics. David Baltimore, who studied biology, won the Nobel Prize in medicine in 1975 for his work in virology. Richard Feynman was a professor of physics who developed quantum electrodynamics (QED) and won the Nobel Prize in physics in 1965.. Charles Richter, the world famous theoretical geophysicist, developed his earthquake magnitude scale known as the Richter Scale.

In addition to famous alumni, there are also famous programs. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is a research and development center operated by Caltech in collaboration with NASA. This federally funded partnership begin in the late 1950's and today focuses on the creation and operation of robotic interplanetary vessels and machines. Their famous projects include the Mars rovers Ranger, the moon Surveyor missions, the Venus Mariner missions and the Jupiter Galileo mission. In addition to this, the Graduate Aeronautical Laboratories of the California Institute of Technology (GALCIT) was created in the late 1920's as a research institute that focuses on rockets. They collaborated with the military during WW II and researched rocket- aircrafts and long-range missiles.
