With a history that stretches back to 1899, Azusa Pacific University has the largest population of undergraduate students attending a Christian university. As part of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, the school provides an inter-denominational education to almost 11,000 students in schools around Southern California, as well as through its online University College. The school has ties to a variety of evangelical Christian denominations but considers itself inter-denominational.

The school first began offering classes in Whittier, California in 1900, and it would start offering degrees by the late 1930s. A group of Quakers and Methodists founded the school as the first Bible college on the West Coast.
