American Sentinel University was established in 1988 by the joining of the American Graduate School of Management and American College of Computer and Information Sciences. The new institution offered the combination of business programs and technology programs of the two previous schools. It was one of the first completely online institutions in the country. In the late 1990s, the CEO of American Sentinel University founded the American Graduate School of Management. In 2004, the university relocated to Denver, Colorado. In 2005, the school became Sentinel University, a nursing school offering online programs. The institution also obtained the American College for Computer Information Sciences. In 2006, the schools joined to create American Sentinel University with the dedication to provide superior, innovative degree and certificate programs. The Doctor of Nursing Practice in Informatics Leadership is intended for current nurses with a master's degree seeking to pursue informatics positions in today's dynamic health care field. The program is offered online and it focuses on advanced management and leadership skills and sophisticated critical thinking abilities. Students have the ability to work alongside nursing leaders from various health care organizations. The program takes about 28 months to complete and includes one four-day residency and two-day virtual residency. The in-person residency is paid for by the university. The informatics leadership specialization degree requires the completion of 42 credit hours. The rigorous curriculum covers an array of issues in nursing and healthcare. The courses include application of nursing informatics in clinical practice, application of nursing informatics in administration, leadership and management, perspectives on nursing informatics, health statistics, strategic leadership and planning, advance statistics, and healthcare informatics. The curriculum is kept current so students have the ability to handle modern healthcare issues. The practice experiences are designed to provide students with the ability to apply the knowledge and concepts to the nursing courses. The experiences are split into practice learning experiences, precepted practice experiences, and capstone hours.
