American Public University appears in these rankings:
American Public University was founded as the American Military Institute in 1991 by James P. Etter, a retired Marine Corps officer. The institute was revolutionary as it offered flexible, career-level education to military learners who had needs that were unique from other students. For ten years, the institute grew to include a wider range of online programs at both the undergraduate and graduate level, designed for those in the military who were seeking leadership roles or who needed to transition into post-military careers.
The institute was reorganized in 2002 into the American Public University System and became American Public University, continuing the vision of providing access to quality, affordable education to a broader audience of adults with challenges that did not allow them to attend a traditional university. The school emphasizes public service disciplines and provides education to more than 100,000 students around the world through more than 180 online degree programs.
American Public University has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report in the top ten percent of online bachelor degree programs and received the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection's Environmental Excellence Award in 2013.
