Adelphi University appears in these rankings:
Agnes Scott College opened in 1889 as the Decatur Female Seminary in Decatur, Georgia. After Colonel George Washington Scott made a major donation to the college, it changed its name to Agnes Scott to pay honor to his mother. It operated as the Agnes Scott Institute for nearly two decades before adopting its current name. Unlike other schools for women that formed during the 19th century, Agnes Scott is still only open to women. It does not admit male students to any of its programs because it believes in creating a safe and comfortable environment for young women. Agnes Scott is also part of the Seven Sisters of the South, which is a group of colleges for female students located in the southern region of the United States.
Many students love the beautiful campus that the college operates in downtown Decatur. The campus has its own observatory and planetarium, a large athletic complex and multiple buildings that all sit on more than 90 acres of land within the city. The campus itself is on the National Register of Historic Places. Agnes Scott received recognition in recent years for the sustainability measures it implemented to increase the clean air of its campuses and to reduce energy consumption through the use of solar panels. Despite its large campus, the college has an enrollment of fewer than 1,000 students.
Agnes Scott College Accreditation Details
The state of Georgia granted Agnes Scott College the right to award degrees to students and to offer classes at the college level. It also has the approval of all 50 states to offer online degree programs to students living in those states. This allows students to complete programs and earn degrees, even if they live a significant distance from its Decatur campus. The regional accreditation that Agnes Scott has comes from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. As a type of institutional accreditation, this allows the college to award degrees to anyone who successfully completes all the requirements in one of its programs.
Agnes Scott College Application Requirements
Agnes Scott College is one of many colleges across the nation that now use the Common Application. Instead of creating an account with the college's website and applying through that application, students must complete an account via the Common Application website. They can apply to just one college or apply to two or more schools through this site. Each college they select will have different requirements in place. Some schools may require an admissions essay or a resume. Students should keep in mind that they will need to pay the application fee charged by each college. Applying to Agnes Scott via the Common Application requires that students fill out the supplement section for the college.
They will then need to request that a teacher fill out an evaluation form on that site that gives the college a better understanding of the student's skills and abilities. The high school a student attended will need to submit a secondary school report and a high school transcript. Agnes Scott also requires that students submit either a standardized test score or a graded essay or paper from high school. They can also attend an interview session with one of the counselors working for the college in lieu of submitting a paper or test score. All students must also submit a midyear report. Home schooled students need to complete the same application but also fill out a supplemental form and supply the college with two or more references.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The estimated cost of attending Agnes Scott College is nearly $50,000 a year. This price includes two semesters of full course loads, room and board on campus and all fees charged by the college. Those who live at home with their parents or live away from the campus can save more than $11,000 a year and bring their costs down to around $38,000 a year. Agnes Scott estimates that its students spend around $2,000 a year on personal expenses and textbooks.
The college recommends that those who need financial aid file the FAFSA immediately after submitting an application. Merit-based scholarships are available to those who meet certain requirements. Unlike need-based scholarships that schools offer to students who need more financial assistance, merit-based scholarships go to those who scored highly on the ACT or SAT and have a high grade point average. Taking advanced placement courses in high school can help a student increase his or her GPA. Agnes Scott financial aid packages may include grants from the federal or state government, loans from the federal government and placement in the federal work-study program. The college also offers a tuition exchange program that helps students from certain states qualify for lower tuition rates and payment plans for those who want to make regular payments every month.
Agnes Scott College offers approximately 39 majors. One of the more unique programs it offers is a one that lets students create their own majors. Also known as the student designated major, the college created this program for students who wanted to study specific subjects that the college did not offer as a full major. Students can turn a minor into a full major or create an individualized major based around their own interests. Middle Eastern studies and political sociology are a few examples of programs students designed in the past. Students must still complete all general education requirements, but they can then select other classes to fulfill their major and gain course credit for studying abroad or doing an internship.
The college also offers a studio art major for students who want to gain experience making their own artwork. They must take a minimum of 10 courses in drawing, painting and other topics in addition to the college's gen ed requirements. This program allows students to get feedback from their classmates and professors. There is also a business management program that is popular among students. This program teaches students how to communicate more effectively, organize their thoughts and writings, find solutions to common problems in the business world and inspire others. Agnes Scott College business management graduates later opened their own companies, worked for Fortune 100 and Fortune 500 companies and went to graduate school to complete MBA programs.
