Being an TESOL/ESL teacher opens the window to a number of distinct career settings. TESOL/ESL teachers can find demand for their skills in a variety of places, and the choice in which of these places to go to ultimately depends on which is the most personally relevant. The following are just a few examples of the many different career settings that there are for TESOL/ESL teachers to apply themselves if they see fit. Depending on the level of experience that a teacher has, it may be possible that each of these career settings has differing branches of potential paths for development as a teacher gets more mileage in their career and continues to develop their repertoire of knowledge.

International Language Instruction

There are many different programs overseas with a demand for those who can instruct others in the best way to learn and speak English. Depending on the unique background of a teacher in question, certain areas might be a better fit for their English-speaking skills than others. In order to determine what the best country is for a teacher to instruct students in English in, a teacher will have to carefully consider how well they can acclimate to the culture of their new surroundings.

Independently Teaching Other Teachers

Just as there are those who would benefit from a teacher's power to give them better English skills, there are also teachers who would benefit from being taught better teaching methods in general. An experienced TESOL/ESL teacher can find that they can have a very fulfilling career in sharing what the best methods of instruction are with those who can make use of those skills themselves. A teacher who instructs other teachers in the best ways to give students better prospects for learning may find that they can successfully run an independent practice on their own terms.

Administrative Work

After being established as a competent TESOL/ESL teacher, it is possible to go into administrative work by helping a curriculum of a higher learning university be more efficiently designed. English departments have a very real level of demand for teachers who have had experience in going overseas and learning the different ways that international education programs are facilitated.

Community College Instruction

Aside from working in an accredited institution, teachers can also lend their skills to community college instruction as well. By working in a community college, a TESOL/ESL teacher can lend their experience to the benefit of those who either may not yet be enrolled or lack the opportunity to be enrolled in a private university or college.

K-12 School Settings

A TESOL/ESL teacher can be just as much of an asset the young children as they can be to adults. At the K-12 level, teachers can help establish a foundation for students who may go on to any number different potential careers as they further develop their ambitions for their futures. When in the K-12 school setting, teachers may find that their abilities are best lent towards the assistance of certain kinds of learners specifically; this can potentially be leveraged to help the teacher better define themselves as a uniquely specialized kind of instructor.
