Going to college can be quite expensive, but if you decide to major in anthropology, you'll find a number of anthropology scholarships that can help. Scholarships usually come in two forms. Some organizations will send a check directly to you and in your name that allows you to use it for anything you need. Other organizations will mail the funds to the university of your choice. These scholarships can cover your tuition as well as any of your other expenses.

Catherine W. Pierce Scholarship

Though some scholarships are available to incoming freshmen, the Catherine W. Pierce Scholarship is open only to those already enrolled and taking classes at an accredited college. You must be enrolled in a traditional four-year program and have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher to qualify for the scholarship. Students applying for the scholarship must also major in a field relating to art or history, including anthropology, art history, graphic design, urban planning or graphic arts.

Dora J. Prieto Scholarship

As an anthropology major at an accredited college or university, you can apply for the Dora J. Prieto Scholarship. Though the scholarship is open to students studying other fields, those students must provide proof that they work with some type of anthropology program or a museum. The size of the award varies from year to year but goes to students who need more financial help paying for college. Those applying must have a grade point average of at least 2.5. Students can apply as an incoming freshman or in one of their later years.

Arthur C. Parker Scholarships for Archaeological Training

The Arthur C. Parker Scholarships for Archaeological Training is a scholarship program available through the Society for American Archaeology. You will need to submit your application by the middle of December. Requirements for obtaining a scholarship include being a member of a Native American tribe or doing work on archaeological work a reservation. Winners receive up to $5,000 that they can use for education expenses or for other expenses associated with doing fieldwork. The SAA also offers scholarships designed specifically for archaeology students at the undergrad and graduate levels of between $5,000 and $10,000.

Bennetta Jules-Rosette Graduate Student Essay Award

When applying for anthropology scholarships, you always want to look at the deadline or the due date for applications. This scholarship programs moves the due date to the beginning of June, which gives you plenty of time to work on your application. The Association for Africanist Anthropology offers this scholarship to students who study African archaeology or anthropology. Though you will need to write an essay based on the top listed on the application form, you have the chance to win up to $1,000 towards your graduate education.

Carrie Hunter-Tate Award for Students in Anthropology

Anthropology students typically do a lot of research and fieldwork that colleges expect them to pay for out of their own pockets. This scholarship fund helps anthropology students pay for their research expenses. Scholarship sizes range based on whether you are in college or grad school. In addition to the application, you need to submit an official transcript from your college and your most recent resume, which should list any professional anthropology experience you have. You must also write an essay that describes some of the research that you want or hope to do.
